Hello,
After view some of the great images posted here for various motorsports, I thought I'd like to have a crack at it. I live in the SE of London and don't really follow any type of motorsport, so I'm open to any suggestions about how to start, ie about locations, types and events.

Brands would be ideal for you, not that far away. Get yourself down there as much as you can, some days are free some only cost £10 etc etc (big events about £25) - and get shooting! Play with shutter speeds to enable the pan like this:

but the most important thing............ HAVE FUN!

Thanks! Do you have any tips on what I should bring? monopod/tripod or hand held? And any suggestions on the best place to stand?

Thanks Guys,
Now need to get myself organised to get along to the events. Any other suggestions for location apart from Brands Hatch?

Brands Hatch is the closest to London, being just outside the M25 near Swanley - and its pretty good for photography - best to go on a club meeting or test day, not a big event.

Everything else is 60+ miles away.

Lydden in Kent is pretty close too. But a bit more low key than Brands.

Second that. Go on a club day, or track day, then you'll get inside access at the hairpin. Great place to shoot. Don't forget to chat to the marshals.

Motorsport is not limited to racing at major circuits. There are loads of events at temporary venues and there are loads of less well known fixed venues. There's racing, but there are also sprints, hillclimbs, karting, trials, autotests, drifting, etc etc
And there are tons of small club events
Temporary venues used include airfields (live and abandoned), MOD, stately homes, beaches, carparks and farmers fields.

for random examples of Kart circuits:
just north of London, http://www.hoddesdonkartclub.co.uk/clubinfo/index.htm
near Chatham, http://www.buckmore.co.uk/content.php/61020

have a look on the organising body websites

for cars its mainly (but not exclusively)http://www.msauk.org/custom/asp/home/default.asp
they do a calendar and an event finder based on postcode

for motorcycles its mainly: http://www.acu.org.uk/

find the local motor clubs and ask them what's on locally, not everything gets advertised nationally. There is a lot of club level motorsport that is organised purely for competitors rather than to make money out of specatators. A lot of the small events are free to spectate (although you may get roped into marshalling which means no playing with the camera)

Is any of the sports types that are easier than others, or is it the course that makes the difference?

Logically, the faster the motorsport the harder a decent pan will be. Just need to practice lots on the technique, and once that is mastered it can be applied to any motorsport. But from experience panning a bike around Druids at Brands is a damn sight easier than panning a F1 car at Barcelona! :)

But its all good fun!!!
