Mounting a camera on a car. Ideas?

Yes
I'm really wanting to do a bit of car photography, mainly just messing about with my car, but don't want to spend the earth and buy a massive car rig until I've had a go really.

I was wondering if anyone uses/knows of any car mounting equipment that's safe (for the car first and most foremost!) and reliable, not ending up with my camera on the ground! I was thinking of not bothering putting my DSLR on it (to save weight) and using my micro 4/3 system.

I'm looking to just get some interesting low angles, action shots, roof shots outside the car and maybe some movement shots with a static cabin, you know the score. I'm aware I won't be able to get a full images of the car moving etc... as that requires a massive rig, but some thing that holds the camera away from the car a bit and allows for some pivoted adjustment would be nice.

Any help guys?

Thanks!

I use a gopro suction mount with a tripod adapter.

Ahhh... Great thinking on the adapter! Will this hold the extra weight of a micro 4/3 camera and lens securely?

I've had a camcorder at 50mph without issues, but I wasn't hugely worried about it falling off. I also always tether the mount to something just in case.

I'd be doing it more for photography, so slow shutter and slower speeds. Not sure about tethering it, don't want it dangling and hitting my car. Rather lose the camera then dint or chip my paint, suppose if i'm going slow though it would just rest against the car... I've looked at the weights. The camera I want to put on is 2.5x heavier than a Gopro. Surely the suction mounts are quite strong though. I mean, it must be to support a Gopro on a fast moving vehicle...

Even if it is not tethered, if it falls off it will probably bounce off or back up onto the bodywork.

I opted for a triple foot Delkin Fat Gecko, as my camera is fairly weighty. (much much more than a Go Pro). Just bear in mind that curved body panels will not hold any suction device.

This gives peace of mind and is delightfully difficult to prise off afterwards. Not cheap, but do you really want your camera in pieces on the road behind you, or worst still bouncing into the path of someone else?
