Move from 40D to 1D mk3/5d mkII

Hi all,

Just checking I've not missed anything.......thinking of upgrading from a 40D to either a 1d mkIII or a 5d mkII, so assume I'm right in thinking I would need to make the following changes....


Sigma 10-20mm >> Canon 17-40L

Canon 17-55 2.8 >> Canon 24-105L

Canon 50mm 1.8 >> Canon or Sigma 85mm 1.8

Canon 70-200 F4 (non-IS) I could keep, will just be shorter, so maybe look at buying a TC.


That should give me a like for like swap right? Nothing I have missed? Budget is tight, and that upgrade will probably cost me £1500 via selling/buying so trying to keep it as sensible as possible.

I don't really fancy a 7D so I think a 5D mkII or 1D 3mkIII is the next logicial step, nothing else equals ALL of the 40D's abilities and improves on them etc and gives me the higher ISO performance I crave.
 
The 1D Mk 3 & 5D Mk 2 are two totally different cameras. What do you like shooting? The 50mm will work on either. I wouldn't bother changing that just yet.
 
Depends on what you intend to shoot. The 5D2 & 1D3 are totally different beasts....
 
Yes but they are both upragdes from the 40D.

1D mk3

Positives = better IQ than the 40D, better ISO performance, awesome focusing. No need to buy a grip (seem REALLY expensive on the 5d).
Negatives= Not as good IQ or ISO as the 5d mk2.

5d mk2

Positives = top IQ, top ISO.

Negatives = Focusing system not amazing compared to 1D mk3, grips are expensive, lose reach on my 70-200.


Problem is I shoot EVERYTHING, people/portraits, events, cars (static & moving), Rugby, wildlife, literally any excuse to use the camera! :) I know the 7D is the jack of all trades, master of none, but the IQ is never raved about, and neither is it's ISO performance.
 
Never owned a 1D3 but based on the fact you shoot wildlife, rugby etc the logical choice to me would be that.
 
I use the 5D MKII for all my bird photography, I've never noticed the focus problems that many people including yourself mention. I also own a 7D but seldom use it.
I mainly try to photograph birds in flight like for instance the short eared owls I posted recently. I prefer my 5D MKII over my other camera because it handles high ISO much better.
If I could only have 1 camera it would definitely be the 5 D MKII.

This is of course just my findings & I know a lot of people will have different opinions but good luck with your search & have fun working it out.
 
isnt the 5dmkII a full frame camera? if it is then you have a massive difference to consider as the 1dmkIII is a crop.

Indeed 5d is FF and 1D is 1.3 crop, changes the lens choice if you wish toi maintain field of view from 40D (which is a 1.6 crop of course)
No integral flash on either 5d or 1d so if you use the pop-up on the 40D a lot you need to factor in an external gun.

Batteries are different on 1D, think the 5D (mk2 ) also, 5D mk1 shares same bateries but I think it changed with 5d Mk2 (you will need to check). Second card slot on 1D Mk2 is SD, no idea on mk3.

1D3 is a better all round body, but sadly lower res. Printing at A3 is absolutely fine though, maybe higher

A good compromise is 1Ds mkII. I just couldn't reconcile with the shortcomings of 5D, and in fact I prefer the Ds to my 1DIII.

The lenses are pretty much spot on, but as always there could be other combinations. 1D mk3 may need something wider so look at Tokina 11-16 (OK, you lose 11-13mm but who cares as its the same FOV). 50/1.8 to 85/1.8 is a good move - the little 50 is a laugh in comparison.
 
I know about the crop, but I think my thoughts on the lens line-up in the OP still apply? Maybe change the 17-40L for a 12-24mm.

I have a 430EX so flash is covered too. 1d mk3 has a 2nd slot, one micro SD and one CF.

How do you mean thr 50mm is a laugh against the 85? Just in terms of build quality and perhaps focusing ability?

Well........looks like I've just bought a 1D mk3 so will see how I get on with it and change my lenses, have borrowed one before and fell a bit in love. If it doesn't suit me I can always swap it to a 5D mkII once I've sorted my lens range.

NO. It's CF + normal SDHC

also I dont think the sigma will work on the 5dmII (big black ring around pic)
