Move from m4/3 to DSLR

Got back into photography about a year ago using a Panasonic G1. I now feel its time to join the big boys.

Problem is I have absolutly no interest in the video facility now included in DSLR's.

Could anyone recommend recommend a system where i would get an improvement in image quality over my G1 and I'm not paying for something I would never use.

My initial thoughts are a used D300 or D90 coupled with a 16-85 Nikon VR lens.

I was in the same boat coming from a GF1 and ended up with a canon 5d mark I. Really pleased with it apart from sensor dust issues. The AF isn't amazing either though it's fine on most situations.

I would have preferred a nikon but the decent nikon lenses are so expensive.

I would still keep the G1 if you can afford to, I found my GF1 great for a recent snowboarding trip.
 
You would get the biggest IQ leap going full frame with a 5D classic like grum.

But the stated nikon bodies would perform faster in terms of AF and Fps, and having sensor cleaning and other new features (like live view). That canon is an old body now.

What type of photography do you do?

Thanks Adam I have a passion for landscape, my initial thoughts were to use the G1 when I was hill walking, however i now realise that its very difficult to combine serious hillwalking and serious photography.

Had also thought of a 5D MK II but with a budget of £1500 can't see that happening.
 
you cant go wrong with either of the cameras you mention it depends on what is important to you ...the d300 is more of a "serious" camera and does not have all the hold your hands settings that the d90 has nor does it have video ....that is not to say the 90 is not a good camera indeed my son has one and it produces excellent results if you can stretch a bit further then the d300s may well fit your bill good glass can be sourced readily second hand (grays of westminster is my choice)
 
You'll have to move to more like D5000 or 7D to get any real improvement over the G1. If you're hillwalking surely weight will be important - in which case IMO you'd be better off with something like a GH1 or GH2 which are much improved over the G1, anything DSLR is going bto feel like a tank in comparison - Even 4/3 DSLRs feel cumbersome in comparison.

Thanks Alan, I tend to do my hillwalking with a couple of guys with no interest in photography so hence the reason for the G1, however the more I got into photography I have decided to dedicate some trips solely to landscape photography when I acompany another keen togger, thats why I want to switch to dslr.

Larger sensor = better quality images, more choice of lenses, faster fps would be usefull for wildlife I often encounter, better auto focus. Improvement in low light performance.

The G1 has more than met my expectations and I will probaly keep it for the times I won't be able to take a DSLR
