Move to 5Dmk2 or get a crop sensor camera?

Hi,

I shoot on a 5Dmk1 and love it, however I would love to start making some movies for university projects etc. I have Canon lenses that I can use so don't want to go down the cheap HD handheld route, seeing some of the videos made on the 550D, 7D and 5D mk2 is impressive.

This is just an idea for now anyway, but i'm not sure whether I should sell on my 5Dmk1 and pay an extra 500 pounds ish for the mk2 which has video, or get a 550D and keep my 5D for around the same price. The advantage to that would be I have a full frame and cropped sensor backup camera for photography and can use it for video too. Then again having it all in the mk2 would save me carrying around 2 cameras!

5DII without question.

It is THE video DSLR.

Put it like this. You know that massive holywood blockbuster iron man 2? A few small sections in that were filmed with a 5DII.

The 7D is good value (I think) and has really great high ISO performance for a cropper.

I don't like the handling of the 7D much myself, but it's good enough that I would actually consider moving back to the APS-C format if, heaven forbid, I wanted to get rid of the 1Ds.

The 5DmkII is an excellent piece of kit in my opinion. I would definitely go for it if you have a mark I.

I have to say I think the video on the 7D is fantastic although I did not use it very much.
However apart from not being ff and slightly lower pixels the 7D kicks the ass of the 5D MKII when it comes to still photos.

The 5D MKII apart from video, higher res and larger screen slightly better ISO is the same as your old 5D.
The 7D offers so much more and for around £400 less, the AF on the 7D is amazing, you also get a flash.

I think if you own a 5DMKII you will soon be selling as canon have to bring out a newer model early next year as the 5DMKII is so behind the Nikon D700 for photography and feature wise behind the 7D in so many ways.

5D owners will not agree with me as they have to justify why they own one, however rather than buy one I sold all my Canon gear and went for a D700.

The 7D is too pricey though. It will either have to be selling on my 5D and paying 500 ish for the mk2 or keeping my 5d and paying 500ish for the 550D. The 7D is going to be 900-1000 ish second hand? Not sure if that's correct.

yes and you can sell the 5D for at least half that.

The FF element is massive though, especially if the OP has no EF-S lenses. I certainly couldn't live without a decent wide option! As far as pixels go, the 7D is going to give a diffraction above f5.6, whilst the 5D MKII won't. Whether this bothers the OP depends on what they are shooting. If it's landscapes, I certainly wouldn't give up a 5D (I or II) for a 7D ;)

DXOMark have benchmarked both cameras and conculded that the 5D II gives much better IQ than the 7D:

So I disagree about the 7D kicking the 5D II's ass in that department :)

Sounds like a pretty good upgrade to me lol

I can understand sports or wildlife shooters wanting a 1.6x crop factor and better AF over the 5D, but a rubbish on board flash? Not for me! Remember the full frame 5Ds (both of them) have WAY better high ISO performance than the crop sensor 7D too :)[/quote]

So the 7D is better because it has a flash (lol) and better AF...OK. And the D700 is way better because it has half as many pixels...but better high ISO (obviously)? Sorry, I don't agree.

Not at all, I just disagree with all your arguements :D The D700 is a cracking camera for high ISO, but doesn't give much room for cropping. Nikon have a lot of catching up to do in that area IMO. The D3x has room for cropping, but the high ISO...

Anyway, back to the OP. Depends what you are shooting. Personally, I kept my 5D (which I love) and bought a crop camera for wildlife (that extra reach is useful). Perhaps a video enabled crop camera would allow you to have the best tools for two very different applications?

i started with a 500d. the video was very good quality, but missing manual control. i upgraded to a 5d2 and i don't think i could ever go back to a crop now. the full frame sensor does something magical with your photographs.

for what the op wants, i can't see there is any better option than the 5d2.

As you mention it's for uni projects, maybe something that allows a different avenue of creativity such as that Casio 1000fps camera?

Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUCRZzhbHH0 to see what I mean.

I'd personally keep the excellent 5D and get a dedicated video camera. I used to have the Canon XM1 and granted it's fairly old but it's a 3CCD sensor and is of excellent quality. They can be had for under £500 on Ebay. Otherwise you could get two HD video cameras second hand and get creative doing videos from multiple angles.

5d2, it has the best sensor ever made, seriously if it wasn't for the crop factor they'd replace hubble with a 5d2 and 70-200 IS2 :p

but it has a very notable advantages over the mkI (I have both) iso 200-800 don't actually look any different, the screen is sexual, the new battery life meter and better batteries are really nice. Live view is dead handy for macro and anything else where it won't AF

you'll end up dropping money on glass though :(

primes can be a good road in for cost efficiency

What's this I hear about filming causing the sensor to open and heat up etc.

I love my 7D and will eventually move up to FF but not until the 5D (Mk 3 maybe) can also provide wireless flash. I find it so good to use and still be able to make use of the ETTL that wouldn't want to go backwards in that area.

However, the colour rendition of the 5D is outstanding, it just seems something that you get with FF bodies, and the ISO performance is better than my 7D also.

I have both the 5DII and the 7D. I am still blown away with the image quality of the 5DII, it is that good. The tonal quality, detail and noise handing are simply amazing. I am equally blown away with the autofocus ability of the 7D but the image quality is not as good as the 5DII, noise is surprisingly noticeable at lower ISOs but can be dealt with in Noise Ninja etc.

I use the 5DII most of the time for general photography including people, landscapes and macro where it really excels.
I tend to only use the 7D on very fast moving subjects such as sport and wildlife and mainly with a 400mm lens attached.

Video is not an area that interests me personally but I have been very impressed with what people have shot on the 5DII, even on my own camera.

I regard video on the 5D mk II the same way as nipples on a man. You'll probably never use it, but it's nice to know it's there, just in case :D
