Hi All,

I have recently moved from the Canon 5d mk 3 to the Nikon D810 and could do with a little help with my lens choices.

I mainly shoot landscapes and family shots (often lowish light indoors and out at the park, in the garden/ woods, etc)

With the Canon, I had the 24-70 f2.8L mk2 and the 16-35 f4L. I always found the 24-70 slightly laking for the lower light indoor photography and slightly short for out and about with the family. I was considering adding the 70-200 f2.8 mk2, but decided to switch to Nikon and start again with lenses.

Currently, I've got the Nikon 50 f1.4G and the 16-35 f4G. So indoors and landscape shooting is fairly well covered. However, I'd welcome comments on recommended longer focal length/ more general everyday lens. I've been tempted by the 70-200 f2.8 VR II, but wonder if I'd find it too heavy for a walkabout/ family lens and whether there would be too big a gap in my lenses. Perhaps i should consider a 24-70? Unfortunately, I couldn't stretch to the 70-200 f2.8 VR II and the 24-70 f2.8, however what are your thoughts on the 24-70 f4?

As ever, thank for your help!

Nick

You said you suffer with low light so use your primes, but then you suggest a F4 walk around and the 70 end is too short so what about Nikon 24-120 F4 VR?

Try the 28-70 - cheaper & almost as good. £550 + ish

the 70-200VR2 is excellent...if you get one you wont regret it.

You have a 16-35, & a 50mm so the gap to 70mm isn't much - Id get the 70-200 first.

Thanks everyone for the responses. The 24-120 f4 seems to be regularly suggested and was a lens I'd slightly over looked - some of the reviews suggest it isn't particularly sharp and suffers badly from distortions. I was concerned that the D810 would bring out the worst in this lens.

Don't be confused with reviews of the older model the new f4 version is very good :)

I'm in the same situation. Started and received 16-35mm and 200-500mm VR lenses, about to order 24-85mm VR and now toying with 70-200mm options but thinking towards the 70-200mm F4 VR.

Both lenses I have work great with D810

Really pleased to hear positive comments about the 16-35 on the D810 as this will be my primary combination for landscapes and part of the reason for moving over to Nikon.

I've just picked up a 24-120 with a D750 and it's a cracking lens! Nice and sharp across the range, it's in the classifieds I'm only selling to go primes only :)

i made the same change as you did. The 35 1.8g (fx model) is super sharp and light to boot. I'd recommend it. The 85 1.4g is pretty amazing too, but might not be your bag...
