hi guys,

My 30d died a few weeks ago so im on the lookout for a new camera. Im in two minds whether to wait for the 60d and get something like a sigma 17-70 (which i had before and was perfectly happy with).. or get a 550d and get something like a 24-105 L lens.. now i know people say spend more on the lens and less on the camera but im kind of worried about getting a camera that doesnt feel "right" in my hands. the 30d was great, chunky and robust.. the 550d isnt exactly the same.. but will i appreciate the extras i will get from the 550d which the 30d never had.,.

has anyone else done a downgrade like this!

OK. In that case that only really leaves you the 500D, 550D, 5D MkII or 1D Mk IV. The XXXD series feel like a toy after an XXd or XD body.

thats what i thought! cant really justify the step up to the 7d but im unsure whether the 60d will be similarly priced when it releases!!

decisions decisions!

really looking at the video functionality too!

Not as good as a dedicated video camera, but depends how you want to use it.

I found the XXXD body too small and the controls were too close together for me personally to operate it properly.

Get a 50D and 24-105L then nip into Dixons and buy a HD video camera.

The 50D and lens will blow you away :D

I've got a 5d2 and although I know some people use the video function I don't see the point.

Just my 2p

yeh i understand the video functionality isnt great but its the fact that me or the wife cannot really be bothered lugging along two cameras along whenever we want to photo/video anything.. were not wanting any groundbreaking video as it will end up on DVD anyway so even if its something basic it will be a benefit! i did think about the 50d but ive just sold my hd camcorder to fund this! :D

I like my 550D, add a battery grip and away you go, and if your wife is using it aswell its light

The only thing that stops me getting a xxxD model to replace my 30D is the lack of jog wheek on the back, if Canon would stop using this as a premium feature only available on the xxD and above ranges I would make the swap tomorow.

I'm a bit confused about your lens choices though as the Sigma 17-70 and the 24-105L have very different focal ranges on the crop sensor cameras you are considering. Personally I couldn't live with a 24-105L as a walk about on a crop sensor as it's simply not wide enough for me, obviously your opinion maybe different!

The video functionality is fantastic, have a look on vimeo for the kind of videos people are producing with the 550D and 7D.

Size wise I have large hands being a large person :D but when it came to upgrade from my 400D I just couldn't find anything spec wise to match the 550D for £500.

It might be worth popping into a camera shop and seeing if you can try the 550 with a grip??

Your correct in the wide angle stance and can't fault you in that. The Sigma does give you the range.

I would probably go the way I did when I had a 40d and get a Canon efs 10-22 as well, but thats extra cost.

The big problem comes if you ever step out of the crop frame arena then efs lenses are no longer usable.

Not as good as Arri or The RED one?! It is pretty much better than anything else on the market, including all small sensor toys from £300-3000. The only trouble with the current gen video dslrs is the lack autofocus, but Nikon D3100 seems to have broken the mould.

However, depending on the way you use it, xxxD bodies are a pain to use - small with uncomfortable layout of the controls. You could wait till the end of September (that is the latest rumour) for 60D or try to justify 7d.

im looking at a 7d actually... I have abotu £1300 to play with so if i can get a 7d for £1000 then i`ll get one.. i should be able to grab the 17-70 for around £300 hopefully!!

Anyone got any decent suppliers that will sell me one for £1000! :D

The image quality, shallow dof and higher ISO performance will certainly be of interest to serious moving picture takers but I'm not sure if autofocus will matter as much as most don't use it anyway, do they?

The handling of DSLR's and hobbled features will hold them back and these are areas in which RED and others will leave DSLR's for dead, I doubt you'd want to use a DSLR for serious work without spending some dosh on a serious rig?

I think Kerso is below 1k with uk warranty

I swapped my 30D for a 550D in March this year and haven't regretted it one little bit. The 30D was a lovely camera but it sat on the shelf a lot as I found it just too heavy to carry around in my rucsack on holiday etc. The 550D goes everywhere now. It has re-kindled my interest in photography.

I have average sized hands and find the handling just fine. I much prefer the buttons to the jog wheel on the 30D. Even though I used it for years I still got mixed up when changing settings.

hmm interesting you say that.

well ive asked kerso but hes priced around £1095 so slightly out of my (tight) budget..

has anyone purchased from an ebay seller called robscamerastore.. he has a 7d on for £999 delivered from birmingham!

It would possible be a grey import, could be issues with the warranty, may be a dealer warranty rather than a canon one, you would need to ask lots of questions. Onestop digital HK is £1050 and Digital Rev £1009 for body only, best UK price is £1120.

Not to bothered with it being an import.. Anyway i ordered the 7d for £939 direct from onestop today along with a tamron 17-50.. Total price £1221.. Think i got a decent deal.. It pays to haggle a bit.. Cant wait for depivery now!!
