Moving from 40D to D200?

Hi all,

Just testing the waters on this one, but Im contemplating changing sides and moving to Nikon. Mainly because the place where I work, and a lot of the guys I know that are into photograpy use Nikon, and I would have access to a lot of really high quality glass to play with!

So if I was to move I would be going from a 40D to a D200 (D300 is well out of my price range, and baby number 2 is literally about to arrive so saving's out of the question!).

I'd just like opinions on whether I would notice a massive difference in image quality/features?

As I said its only an idea, but with money being very tight atm due to the :baby:, the possibility of the ability to borrow a great selection of good glass is very tempting......!

So any thoughts guys?

Unless you photograph fast moving objects or sport it might be worth considering a Fuji S5 Pro as well. It shares the D200's body and Nikon lens fitment, but produces nicer images when it comes to portait or landcape work and should come in at around the same sort of money as a D200.

The D200 is solid and reliable and produces great low noise images upto ISO 400. After that things start to get a bit noiser, but can be well recovered using a good noise reduction program. I dont think there would be a massive difference in the IQ beween the 2 as they are both around the same age.

The 40D and D200 are pretty evenly matched, the 40D has a little bit of an edge on recording detail and ISO performance, but probably not enough to be seen in real use.


Go have a play with something similar, see if you like the control layout. (how similar is the control layout on the D300?)

Personally I much prefer the feel and layout of my 40D to the nikon D300 (I tried both before buying), but obviously you might prefer the nikon or be indifferent.

If you have access to high quality nikkor glass and can't get access to high quality canon glass, I'd be very tempted to move across, you'll certainly love using great lenses.
If you like or 'don't mind' the feel of the nikon body, I'd do it .

As others have said, the best advice is to handle both and then decide. I was set on a Canon, but when I played with a Nikon I decided on Nikon. That good glass could well sway you though and with good reason!

(Btw, please be warned - it makes no difference how many babies you have, you will ALWAYS justify any photography purchase. You'll have that D300 within a year )
