Moving from 5D2 to 5D3 - some questions.

I’m seriously considering the 5D3 to site alongside / replace one of my 5DIIs. I was wondering if anyone who has already made the move from the 5D2 to the 5D3 could answer some specific questions for me.

1. During post processing, I found the dynamic range of the 5DII to be quite limited. E.g. when trying to increase the exposure of an under exposed face, the image would break down pretty quickly. Has anyone noticed more flexibility with 5d3 raw files?

2. Shadow detail and banding. I also find this to be a problem on the 5DII. Once again, can anyone provide a meaningful comparison?

I appreciate that its early days and those that have the 5d3 may not have had chance to play properly yet, but any input would be appreciated :)

Cheers.

I've been asking the same questions elsewhere Dav but without any reply.

Are you shooting RAW or JPEG

Can't give a 5Dll comparison as I have a Mk 1 and a Mk111. Haven't noticed that particular problem with the III, but then I normally tend to expose to the right so not had any underexposed images, but then I've only had the camera a week.

I'm away for the next few days in Warwickshire on a shoot. I'll try and take some underexposed images and see if I can replicate the problem. About how much under do you need to be to see the problem?

Dav, I took a very unscientific test shot with the mkIII at iso 100 with -2 stops exposure then brought it back in photoshop for someone on a different forum.. Not a portrait though and I don't have a mk2 to compare either.. but I can post it if you like??

I have some under exposed into the sun bird in flight RAW files from my MKIII your welcome to a copy if you want to play with them.....

You will need to see for yourself to truly answer your question

Guys - thanks very much for the responses so far - appreciated.

I'd be very interested in some sample raw images.

When I get home I'll set up an ftp account so that some images can be uploaded (unless someone can come up with an alternative).

In fact, how about a new thread for 5D3 raw files - as I'm assuming there are others like me that would like to play with RAW images?

Cheers.

The public folder of dropbox is good for these sorts of things.

(The public folder isn't accessible unless you provide the address to the file, so it isn't totally public)

Any updates from you lucky 5d3 owners? How you finding things?

Cheers.

I have not had much opportunity to use it of late but it is exactly what I was waiting for..
It's worth it just for the focus system tbh.

Thanks Matt.

I sort of convinced myself that I am still happy with the Mk2s I have, but last weekends wedding, the old focusing system made things very hard during the first dance. :(

I think I'll get through this year and then buy one ready for next season.

Cheers.
