Moving from Nikon to Canon

I've come to a bit of a T-junction. At the moment I have a Nikon D40 + kit lens and a 55-200 which I will be selling very soon to replace with a 70-300, also some lil bits of accessories but nothing much.

I'm sick to death of the requirement for AF-S lenses as in the long run this seems to cost me more so my question is this: Whilst I will be left with only a D40 + kit would it be worth moving to the light side where there is more choice of lenses that seem to be cheaper?

Another option would be to sell my D40 and get a better body that does not require AF-S but stay on the dark side.

One more thing: As much as I hated the idea at first, I'd really like a body with HD video so I can do some short wildlife clips.

I'd love to know what you all suggest, and before anyone says it, I will be picking up the bodies and seeing which feels best too, this is just a general query. Cheers everyone :D.

Speaking as a fellow mancunian and a Canon user - buy what ever does the job you want to do best.

The usual advice given on this forum to questions like yours is go down to the nearest camera shop and have a play around with their stock. I would suggest the Jacobs shop opposite the back entrance to the Arndale Centre Boots. I've always found the staff there to be very helpful.

P.S. Canon bodies offer true HD 1080P video whilst Nikon's only offer 720P

I would say stick with the brand you have and just get a D90 body for the video side of things I am sure it would much more expensive to change your whole rig instead of just the body.

D90 would be an option. It has the in body motor and HD video capabilities. I have a D60 myself, but I'm going to upgrade to either the D90/D300/D300s after Christmas. (Maybe even consider the D400 depending on when it arrives.) I've used both the D90 and D300 and they are wicked to use. D90 being slightly cheaper, but supposedly produces images of equal quality even over higher ISOs.

Good advise.

Oh and to fastworldimages GROW UP

Thanks for all the advice, so far I'm narrowing it down to D90 and 500D though I think the D90 may be out of my price range even without a kit lens. I shall keep researching though and if anyone has any of these I'd love to hear what you think.

It's less the range and more the cheap availability. Though to be honest with myself I am using it as a bit of an excuse to upgrade. That and I also would like video capabilites as I used to do a lot of video editing and special FX (like the old HP printer advert) with an old miniDV camera that no longer works and I do miss it.

No because he just just expressing an opinion with a little bit of humour.

What was funny about that then, I saw no wink or such to make me think that to me it was yet another dig at owners of another make and let me guess he uses Nikon...

Anyway back on topic...

If I was you I would get a Canon as every one knows Nikon are yesterdays news now Canon have the 7D and 1Dmk4 ;)

And how do you make that presumption? based on the fact I commented on both bodies and didnt say either are crap.

Jeez, I forgot this place was full of baboons looking for arguments 24/7 :bang:

and FYI last time I checked my bag my bodies had the word canon writen on them. Im just not nieve enough to say my particular brand is better than the 'rival' because I use it.

Having a 1d mkIII I would expect you of all people to be able to realise that nikon really have produced a fantastic body in the D3/s and better value than that of which canon is currently pushing in the 'pro'sumer market

I guess I can see though why my fanboy comment might have hit a nerve with you :D

I thought the fanboy comment was quite funny too - and I've had a monumentally shi'ite day...

I can't be doing with any of that malarkey!

Can any of you actually tell what camera an image was taken on?

One of these days I'm going to get all mine out and take the same blooming pic on them all and see who can guess which one took which pic, especially after I throw away 99% of the information in them to resize for the web!

Honestly i could knock heads together sometimes and I've had not a bad day!!

I'll quote Trevor Yerbury "regrettably, now that we have new digital cameras launched every few months photographers seem to think that they must have the latest bit of kit to raise their standards. As a photographer you should be able to create a good image with a box brownie. And perhaps that's the answer- the return of the box brownie"

How many megapixels will it have;)

Ali... Head knock, I will now behave;):)

Real fillum and everfink!

It will have as many megapixels as the ISO of the fillum you put in it ;) lol

Canon 550D? It should be due in January given 1 year release cycle. 500D has very crippled video support, D90 is the worst of all, so 7D or D300 would be your best options if video is essential.

Not that I'm the most decisive person on the planet (far from it) but I really don't know how anyone is expected to make a decision with this hobby....

Assuming I stuck with the crop sensor ranges then I'd be looking at the D300s and the 7D. Both seem to be great cameras with their faults and benefits but neither is a clear winner.

7D - Some extra MP for cropping, a wide variety of lenses.
D300s - 51 Auto focus points, built like a tank, dual card slots.

This hobby could drive me crazy :bonk:

...

Hey thanks for the advice, but the 7D and D300 is deffo out my price range of about £600.

I think the arguments over who has the better technology is a waste of time (for me anyway) as I'll not be buying Pro level cameras for a good while yet anyway so I'll wait and see who's winning then lol.

Don't want this turning into a battle ground though, as much as I appreciate all the traffic onto this thread. From what I've seen on youtube the video seems to be a bit juttery, I don't mind it not being crisp but fluid motion is a must for me. Can anyone confirm this is just youtube or is the video playback (even if just VGA) really that bad?

I've got a D40 and I'm buying glass atm instead of a new body. I'm going to wait next year for a new body, possibly a D90, but I'll see what they come up with and if my bank raid is successful ;)

That's the most sensible way for sure but I figured whilst I'm not in too deep I should consider a swap as I knew nothing when I first got my D40 so now with a bit more knowledge I can make my commitment to whichever brand.

Also on the case of video, after watching some that weren't just 10 year old running around with it I realise it really is quite good (so long as on a tripod or steady hands).

I'm pretty sure the 500d is the one for me unless anyone can point out a major flaw, like the AF-S needs of the D40.

grey.squirrel... If your budget doesn't run to the cost of a D90 or the equivilent Canon (or other brands), then perhaps it's worth looking at something pre-owned? And, if you're purely thinking of moving away from familiar features/sw/etc, then perhaps something like a D80 would suit you in the interim! That way you'll be able to escape the need for AF-S glassware

Thanks soo much for all your input everyone but I'm sold on the 500d now. I still need a bit more time to research but this is pretty much it for me. The video is really important to me as I've been planning on getting a video camera but this will fit my needs for the foreseeable future. As I've said on a previously, unless anyone can drag me kicking and screaming away with a good reason, I'm afraid it's goodbye to the dark side. Thanks again everyone.

When you say upgrading to a D90 vs getting a Canon and not being able to afford the D90 unless it's body only... are you sure you're not going to lose the price difference when you change over all your glass too?

Not trying to convince you that you should get a D90, but if you get a D90 body only you don't need to sell your 2 lenses, just upgrade the body. Moving to Canon means you'll take a hit on the glass, unless you pick up second hand lenses for about the same price.

Just a thought.

The only reason I can afford the 500d is by selling all my gear, so keeping the lenses and getting a D90 body is simply not doable. I was about to sell my 55-200 anyway to upgrade to a 70-300 but as I was at a good point to sell everything, I thought it best to swap over now before I have some serious glass.

Also sorry fabs, I know I'm pushing my luck.

Hmm Interesting Discussion i've go the same Dilemma only that i buying my 1st DSLR so nothing to sell.

But i'm stuck between choice on a D90 and 500D and am tempted to go for the 500D as D90 just out of price range and just checking today you can get a 500D fro around 550 from jacobs and Comet with discount code and then get 50 quid money back which makes the price even more interesting.

You soon get rid of £50....but it is a long time to have the wrong camera for the sake of a few quid.

Make your decision on the equipment NOT THE PRICE....wait a week and don't go tothe pub this Saturday...there is the difference in your pocket straight away.

My thinking exactly, and with the couple of hundred you save, go treat yaself so a nice big lens ;) lol

Also I never though about comet discount codes so thank you very much.

No probs and thats my thinking exactly and i don't want o be no professional so i think the 500d would last me years unless i need to upgrade for some new really wonderful feature which i doubt

Anyway Camera Price Busters is site to check they even display the discount code so no need to hunt also maybe if you go via quidco or similar site and with comet just do reserve and collect online so you get better price but pickup instore
