moving from sony to either canon 6d or nikon d600

Ok so ive done a few weddings now with my sony a580 and although the end results arn't to bad, I had to leave the camera permanently on manual focus becauce the auto focus is a combination of either to slow doesn't track well or struggles completely in low light. So either way im not a fan of the slt series of sony cameras, so this is the bit that i think i jump ship. I was pretty confident about getting the nikon d600 over the canon 6d up until i saw the yesterday, although the d600 seemed to focus better with better depth of field, i found that the 6d balanced the over all image better i.e i took a picture of a lamp and the 6d had both that and the back ground and the d600 had just the lamp and the back ground was completely black, the continuous focus on the d600 in movie mode looks nice on paper but it seems you have to press the shutter half down for it to do so, and its not to smooth maybe i was doing something wrong i dunno i only spent about 10 minutes with it.
So which do i go for .... help
Landscapes wildlife and milkyway photography our the hobby side of things so detail is important for me on that note
Any opinions for and against?

why dont you like the slt models? my a77 focus's very fast, much faster than my a55. can depend on lens too, 16-50 is very fast to focus

A lot of Nikon owners (D3, D700, D4, D800) achieve continuous focus by using the AF-ON button instead of the shutter button. http://www.nikonblog.net/autofocus-af-on-lens

The D600 doesn't have an AF-ON button though - you'd have to assign the AE-L/AF-L button to be an AF-ON button. (Menu setting f4 - page 244 in the manual).

I accept that at sports and places with plenty of light it its brilliant, I used my friends nex 7 and the electronic view finder, is good, where theres plenty of light, but its really hard to focus in the pitch black of the night, when doing milkyway/astrophotography, its hard enough with my own eyes, and that fixed mirror is stealing that little bit of detail im struggling to get.
so essentually im looking for a camera for both work and play.

ah yeah, when you get to very low light then that mirror starts to matter, but isnt a evf better in the dark as it can rake up the iso to lol000 so u can see stuff in the dark, while a ovf cant do that, im sure ive seen guys with cannon and nikon switch to live view in that situation
 
An a580 isn't SLT technology, an nex 7 uses contrast detect autofocus like any other compact camera.

Not quite sure where to go with this thread now given the above but if your dead set on leaving sony, the Nikon has better focusing and better everything, for less:)

What lenses are you using with the a580? Also there are two focussing methods it can be set to so its worth trying both.

Also worth trying the a77 as that is more of a pro body. The a580 is a mid range one and its out of date now really. A77 has full AF in video too.
 
Fairly basic lens minolta 50mm prime sony sam 35mm prime 1.8 version kit lens 18 to 55mm and a sigma 28 to 300
i also used a 70 to 300 g lens not mine mind
I know a580 isn't slt but it still have a good live view feature (focus level check) which opens up the main sensor so you get what you see on the main screen
Not the same as the evf but same principle and very useful

you do know that there is a setting that will increase gain on the EVF in low light, almost becoming like a mini image intensifier? With that enabled you can see in the EVF at light levels that you won't with an OVF (it will be grainy though).
& I noticed that you mentioned the D600's AF in video mode - if that's potentially important to you then the SLT's AF in video is streets ahead of either Canon or Nikon.
 
True ill give it the af is better, when i was using the nex 7 and a580s main sensor on trying to focus on the milkyway i could only do it through the ovf even that was hard mind. Ill have to take a look at the a77 or a99 im really not a fan of the fixed mirror I'd rather they take it away completely then have it there at all i do like the evf in bright situations though but found it harder to focus on the fighter jets at Farnborough air show then on the a580 compared to the nex 7 which is the only real evf comparison ive got

oh the translucent mirror is going - it's just a question of when on-sensor PDAF hits the required level to allow it.
I'll agree that compared to current EVFs the OVF is more natural for work like jets at an airshow with 8+fps but you can train yourself & again EVFs will improve further.
 
Looking at the a99 video reviews and it does look good but it seems to have that same nack as my a580 and getting the back ground in focus and not the subject its self. I also been looking at the 5d mk 3 cause im not really liking the 6d or d600 the more i think about it and the 5d3 does look great except for the price.... though there are some atractive prices ive seen
