Moving on from my D300

Hi folks

Been shooting with my current D300 for the last 5 years now and its starting to show its age so I'm looking to replace it (or at least pick up something else and keep the D300 in reserve).

Most of the stuff I shoot is landscape stuff, usually long exposure work (minutes rather than seconds, they're on my 500PX page). I don't really do portraits as I don't know any tame models although I have been asked by a work colleague to do some newborn shots when she finally pops.

I'm not totally committed to any particular system so don't mind either Canon or Nikon but recently I have also been looking at the Sony offerings (A7r and A7s in particular). All of my lenses are DX specific apart from one, which doesn't get used a great deal anyway. I have been looking mostly at FF stuff but sometimes I wonder if something like a D7200 might be a suitable replacement? Or possibly a Fuji XT-1 (seeing as I have an X Pro1 as well but only one lens (16-50 kit lens I got cheap). I've done so much reading and looking that I'm just about turning in circles!

I'm afraid I am one of those where weight is a consideration as I dont drive so its walk/public transport/cycle to places to take photos.

I could probably get the D300 serviced for a lot less than the cost of a new camera but part of me also has a little G.A.S as well :D

What have other D300 users gone on to from their camera?

The D7200 is a very nice camera by all accounts. The lack of an AA filter will be good for landscapes as will 24mp.

The D7200 is also smaller and less bulky than the D300 which should also benefit you.
 
The D7200 has been sat at the top of my list for quite a while. The pull of full frame is strong but I think I'll hold off for a bit longer and stick with crop for now.

unless you need the DX "extra" reach ..... i.e. you are into small bird photography or similar ...... go for FX ........... the lens possibilities and lens quality are just better and the noise even on the Nikon DX sensor is noticeable at anything over ISO 800 in all but a few shooting situations especially if you crop

Depends what you shoot and what lens line up you want to aim for

I shot a lot with the D300 ...... went to the D7000 and was disappointed, similar with the D7100 mainly because of the UI versus the D300 ... kept on the DX trail for the DX crop for small birds ....... just got a D7200 and High ISO seems a little better, but I would not rave about it versus FX

IMHO, the D700 was/is just better, (than the Nikon 7xxx's) for all other photography and the D750 is even better up to the point where I think that I will crop D750 images, (I also found that with the D700) as much as using the D7200 ....... for small birds ....... I only use the DX bodies for birds

(FX - buy used - the D600 and D610 get really good reviews if you want small and light - get a D700 if you want "build quality" and bigger and heavier and a similar feel, a "big brother" to the D300 ............ remember Nikon Flagship body, the D4S is still only at 15mp's)

or the cheapest way if you keep DX, invest in some NR software, especially if you view most of your images on screen

The D7200 makes sense. Lighter and more compact than the D300 and you get to use all your existing lenses. The pull of mirror less is a consideration but are you really going to benefit much by going with Sony or Fuji? I had similar thoughts but stuck with Nikon DX. Glad I did.
 
Once you venture from D300 and/or D700 RAW files into DX D7xxx - think about your processing and computer speed - depending on what you have it could slow you down significantly moving from 10 meg to 24 meg files

Computer upgrade may be necessary

If you use LR .... you need LR 6 .. to recognise the D7200 NEF files

Interesting points there Bill, good to read information from someone who has moved from the D300.

I have a very small selection of lenses (Tokina 12-24 F4, Nikon 35mm 1.4G DX, Nikon 50mm f1.8D) so in switching to FF I would need to replace most of them, although they're not that great anyway! But being able to stick with them for now would keep things cheaper!

Computer won't be an issue, already got LR6 and a high end Mac Pro.

Really liking the photos on your Flickr feed, some really great stuff on there. Are you still using the D80?
