Hoping to get a new tripod soon and wanted one with a multi angle centre column as I really enjoy Macro stuff, but it will also be needed for everything else. I have been looking at the Manfrotto 190XPROB and was wondering if...

a) the multi angle column is any good for Macro work and if people could let me know their experiences both good and bad and;

b) are there any other alternatives in the same price bracket.

Many thanks :thumbs:

I've got the larger 055xProB and I really like that center column for basic macro work.

You might want to couple it with a macro rail and geared head for more precision.

Thanks for that Andy. I will probably look at a macro rail in the long term but needed somthing that gives me more flexibility in the short - medium term.

Is the centre column easy to use or is it quite fiddly :shrug:

Thanks

I've for a 190prob and it's good. The centre column is really easy to use, and the tripod is pretty sturdy. It also goes up to a good height which is good for me as I'm over 6 foot :lol:

The only downside is that it's pretty heavy. But I guess that's to be expected of a tripod at this level.

I got mine on eBay for a bit of a bargain, so it's worth keeping your eye out.

I don't find it fiddly in the slightest, but I can't compare it to any other manufacturers so I best mention that now :lol:

Once the center column is extended, there is a button on the underside of it, press it and it slips through the collar and tilts. I think it is an excellent feature and combined with legs that can almost open 180°. You can also press the button again and slip the entire column out, invert it and effectively use it upside to get closer to the ground - I rarely use this feature.

This chap shows the column in action around 1m50s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5OLBqG2wl8

Thanks for the input people :thumbs:

Bostin - that is a great link and may well be just what I was looking for as it is a bit more adjustable ( and a bit cheaper). I will have a good look around and go and try them in Jessops as they stock both the Giottos and the Manfrotto.

Regards

Nick
