I am possibly about to acquire myself a second hand Canon 40D and will pair it with a Sigma 17-70m to begin with I think.

Currently, I use a Crumpler Pretty Boy L for carrying around my Fuji S6500fd, however I doubt this will be big enough to fit a gripped 40D with lens and in the future: lenses.

I will be starting University at the end of September so most days I will be going to lectures, carrying around notes, pens/pencils, calculator and probably a laptop.

I am looking for a bag that is capable of carrying a gripped body with the ability to carry a couple of lenses. But I would also like to be able to use it for carrying things to lectures without any photography equipment. If nothing would really suit this then I would probably end up getting more than one bag, which isn't ideal considering I will not have lots of space to store such things. Anyone, got any suggestions?
 
there are several options, I use a Tamrac adventure 7 as its split into two, so gear in lower part, general wimmens handbag detritus in upper part [ I can get 2 ungripped bodies with short lenses attached in the small one, so the 10 should carry everything you need as well as a laptop]. This link is to the bigger version which will also hold a laptop >> CLICKY LINKY but I think most of the manufacturers are doing similar kinds of bags these days, Lowepro, Kata, I think even Crumpler do them, so shop around and perhaps visit a large store and have a look at them and try them on for comfort before buying. HTH ;)
 
Crumple new dheli, comes in a few dif sizes but the bigger ones will fit two d300s with grips and a 17-55 2.8 nikon lens along side with a 70-200 2.8 (sadly wont fit on the body) with room for a few flashguns and extras.

It will fit uni stuff such as laptops etc in no problem as long as they arent the 17" ones, i nearly bought this bag before i got a deal on the lowerpro stealth reporter but if i needed to i could still fit my uni stuff in that bag even though it will scream photographer wouldnt be so bad but im doing an I.T degree :D

But with you being at uni you may well be on a tight budget, take a look at the G.E.M camera bag in the bargain section of this forum
 
I don't really want to tie myself down to a budget just yet but I can't be spending silly money on a bag. Although I'm maybe thinking it would be worth getting a seperate bag for my photography stuff and a laptop case. It seems to be an exponential increase from photo only to photo and laptop. I plan on joining the photographic society so I would hopefully get to go on photography trips so it might be better to have a more rugged bag for photo equipment and then one that I can take to lectures.
 
To be fair either the stealth reporter or the new dehli will stand up to whatever you throw at them, i have used mine in torrential rain half way through i flipped over the extra cover but it shrugged off the rain no problem, you can get a laptop skin that adds maybe 2cm to the laptops width so it will still fit in your cam bag np, im terrible for always having my cam with me even in lectures so i just stick to one bag

The new delhi are about 130 iirc and the lowerpro i have about 150, i managed to get one from a seller here for 60 which was awesome but even at full price, whats 150 to protect 2k+ worth of gear.
 
Yeah it is a bit of a stretch, if you keep an eye out in the wanted section bags come up quite often, that GEM camerabag didnt seem a bad purchase but i just didnt feel sold on it, you could always do the old NATO medic bag with some inserts in trick for a cheap solution
 
I'd go for a "one bag does all" if I were you - speaking from personal experience. With two bags you're always going to have something you really need in the other. I've got a Crumpler Daily XXXL which takes everything - big and solid enough for a laptop and the inserts come out to convert the bag to however you want and small enough to pass as hand luggage on a flight. It's major advantage though is that it doesn't look like either a camera bag or a laptop bag. It just looks like a runof the mill bag which keeps prying eyes and sneak thieves away.
 
I have just remembered that I still have a £30 Amazon Gift Voucher which I got last year from a small photography competition. I am considering going for a Lowepro Fastpack 350. Although I wouldn't have anywhere near enough equipment to fill it, it looks like it would be good for going on trips with plenty of room for me to expand in the future. If I am out walking then I would probably rather have a backpack than a shoulder bag.
