OK.... here is the story. I was bitten by the DSLR bug several years ago and purchased my first DSLR - 450D with kit lens (2008). I have since spent more time researching lenses and using price comparison websites; trying to find a bargain than I've actually spent taken pictures. Then lenses i possess currently are as follows:

Canon 18-55 IS (kit lens),
Canon 17-85 IS USM,
Canon 50 f/1.8,
Canon 50 f/1.4,
Canon 55-250 IS,
Tamron 28-300 non VC,
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8,
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (on its way),

I know there is a lot of overlap in focal range but my quest to find the perfect lens continues. Given the above, and the fact i would like to remain married to my overly patient wife, I need to reduce my collection considerably. Here are my thoughts. Sell the kit lens, 17-85, 50 1.8 and the 28-300, therefore keeping the 50 1.4, 55-250, 17-50 and 28-75. Or should the 28-75 go as well? Or is there any need to keep the 1.4? Or....?

The majority of my pics are portrait, taken indoors of my children. Your thoughts will be greatly received as my indecisiveness cannot continue.

Glad to hear that your wife is a patient woman :D anyways I think u have answer your question yourself. Just that I want to add that I think u should sell the 28-75 as well. I own that lens once, and its a bad copy. I'm not happy with it and I sold it off. Keep the 1.4 50mm. That's a great lens.

You should get quite a bit for that lot so you can buy the Mrs a bunch of flowers.

My personal choice, just keep:
Canon 50 f1.4
Tamron 28-75 (or Tamron 17-50 if you want wider)
Canon 55-250 IS (if you need a bit of reach)

Those 3 lenses cover walkabout, telephoto, and a fast prime. All you really need in my opinion! And you could get a whole load of flowers with the money you raise :D

Add a wide angle lens! The sigma 8-16mm. That should cover all your range :p
 
Oh, and give up the search for the perfect lens. It simply does not exist.
 
Many thanks for your comments, my thoughts seem to mirrored. I'll keep hold of the 28-75 for a little while longer and see how I get on with the wider Tamron. The good thing is that I could probably get what I paid for them which is something I can't say about my wifes shoes.
 
keep the canon 50mm f1.4 and the tamron 17-50 f2.8 and sell the rest.

Then buy a canon 70-200 :thumbs:

Don't tempt me. I have been keeping a close eye on the 70-200 f4. It would be great to own an L lens.

Received the 17-50 earlier and as expected, I am impressed. Although I took a few pics of some text and the area of focus seems to be just behind where I was aiming. Is this whats called a back focusing issue???
 
70-200 f4 IS is s great lens I love mine.

It might be, do a search for testing lens and it will explaine the best way to test for this. Normaly focus on flat object and have a ruler at 45 deg and check to see ruler is in focus at same point as flat surface.

My thoughts on the post differs a bit from some above.

My view would be to go back and look at what focal lengths you use most and keep whichever lens or lenses covers these lengths.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the 50f1.4 (got rid of mine about two months ago). I really rate the Tammy 28-75 but realise that on your body it may not be wide enough for familly group shots etc.. OOI, I have kept my 28-75 and passed on a 24-70L I think the Tammy is THAT good. So, I would keep the Tammy 28-75, Canon 50f1.8, and I would agree on getting a 70-200f4 used. This latter lens (with its IS equivalent) is legendary for not a massive amount of cash.

Hmmmm.... decisions, decisions. I really would love the 70-200 IS but I think I would only use it 20-30% of the time. If I was gonna part with £600ish, I would probably buy the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 or possibly the Sigma 17-50 OS as I believe the Tamron VC is pants.

You can get the non-IS version for MUCH less than £600 which is what I was alluding to above.

Not a serious suggestion but if you want to get the best piccies of your kids you should sell EVERYTHING and get a 35f1.4L ! That is just the nicest little lens on the planet IMHO.

Managed to get a grand total of £425 for the 50mm1.8, 18-55mm, 17-85mm & 28-300mm off the Bay. I'll be stung with fees but more than happy with my return. I'll see how I get on with my newly obtained 17-50 and then might off the 28-75mm. Many thanks for your advice. Top forum
 
Just enough for a nice canon 70-200 f4 and maybe some flowers to keep the wife happy!
