Just tinkering about with it got desk lamp on 1 side and flash on a tripod on otherside. With a paperweight on a white cloth ontop of a box of cd's to raise it up a bit
Julian, it might be better with 2 desk lights so that you can use normal aperture mode and the exposure will stay the same. Have you tried using it yet. Just stick something inside it and take a shot. The netting will diffuse the light and give you an even lighting for your subject. Well that is the theory.
Flash and desk lamp mix wont be that successful, there will be a horrible white balance issue! And the flash will definately overpower the desk lamp.
Go with Darren's advice and use two desk lamps and bung the camera on the tripod to compensate for the longer exposure required.
I will get sons desk lamp down in a bit and try both, I have the black background on it now using the paper weight I like how it looks but far from perfect.
Looks like a laundry basket As Darren says, try and use matching light sources and set the white balance accordingly. I used to use two B&Q work lamps, but at 500 watts they tended to make everything a tad on the warm side - and I don't mean the colour
As a longer term solution a slave flash with your spangley SB900 would be a better solution as lights which are permanently on create a lot of heat which can cause problems.
It is a little out of focus. How far away from the object are you? You might be too close to focus (with your lens) in which case you might need to go further back and crop.
I do agree with the above posts about constant light source vs flash, if it were me I would use flash, not desk lamps due to heat issues as mentioned above
