Well I ended up with a bargain I could not say no too, and am now the proud owner of a MacBook 13, with 4Gb RAM, and the 2.4Ghz CPU. I must say I am impressed, bootup in 20 sec max from switch on, too ready to use.

Now I am just getting things on, got Office 2008 MAC on, for Word and Excel. Ordered CS4 MAC.

Now what other good stuff is out there? Any firewall wall of Antivirus needed?

Any good untils, you lot can't live without.

assuming you are running os x before you do anything else get yourself a big external drive, even better get an external box with two discs and RAID 1, then set up Time Machine. That will run backup every hour and you'll never think about losing another file.

I have a macbook similar to yours - it sits on the floor with a big monitor and keyboard attached, plus Freecom datatank for Time Machine that lets me take all my work with me but leave a secure backup at home.

You can now get picasa for mac - the only application that was keeping me running a pc, it's such a relief not to need one and be able to ditch the dell, for firewall get little snitch, it stops things 'phoning home' and gives you an awesome feeling of power. Try comic life for putting together quick collages.
 
Fantastic, was going to ask what this Time Machine was all about. I have a couple of 1Tb external drives I could easy use. So will it do a compleate backup a bit like Norton Ghost will for the PC. I am trying to get away from the PC as much as possable. Just popped Little Snitch on, bought nice and easy. I must say I love how easy everything is, and it just seems to work.
 
Bought 3 macs last year after not touching one since 1990. Talk about a leap of faith.

Yes, TM backs everything up. It's not that good if you only want to back certain things though imo.

like i said in one of the other threads, DO NOT rely on a raid box as a single point of backup. when the controllers fail they will wipe out all attached disks.

Smutron if you do any coding
iStatPro is a great widget to have in the Dashboard
 
Time Capsule if you can afford the extra pennies is well worth it, saves the hassle with having to plug macbook in to the USB external drive all the time as it manages over the wifi.

P.s. the person who said TM wasn't very good at backing up just the bits you want, you can go back in timemachine, find the file or folder your wanting and copy it to the present day (i think, im sure I've done it before)

So not only does it back up your whole machine to be able to restore to. It also allows you to go back and grab a file or folder you may have accidentally deleted.

VLC for playing DivX's and other formats will be very useful

I'm not saying TM can't back up single files well, I'm just saying it isn't very user friendly imo.

Just got Adobe Master Collection installed. Loving it.

Right Choice to go back to MAC for sure.
 
TM is good as a consumer clean sweep back up system, those with more experience will probably still back up other work on top of that but then that's no bad thing
