I am very new to photography and probably have a long way to go before I can call myself a capable beginner.

I recently came into posession of a 20D and a 35-80mm lens. In addition to this, a member of my family used to shoot and has allowed me use of her 28-80mm and 80-200mm lenses as well as UV filters, off camera flash, and some Hoya 'macro filters' (+1, +2, +4).

I intend to get a nifty fifty lens as I have seen some wonderful pictures using these lenses.

My question is what should I be looking at over the next year or so that I can add as I gain more knowledge that will keep me interested and improve my understanding and the enjoyment of shooting?:help:

I like outdoor and studio portraiture, landscape and candid photography.

I fully intend to spend many years with this camera as I understand I need to learn properly before buying a new camera. I know knowledge trumps equipment all day long so please don't lecture me. I just don't know which equipment is best for what, especially lenses.

From what I've seen of your web page on facebook you've captured some really good images.

My suggestion is perhaps try out some of the challenges that appear on TP in the http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=33

Try something new that's outside your comfort zone and see where it takes you, or something like 52 weeks example life in your village / town for a year like a photo documentary or if you like landscape try and capture the different season's in a certain area, night / day / sunset sunrise different locations

Basically just enjoy taking lots of images, perhaps use something like http://www.blurb.co.uk/ to create photo books

One range in your lens that is missing is wide angle,rather than say get an 50mm,I would be looking at adding say an 18-50mm range would be better first.

Agree with Simon to a degree, so if you buy a nifty fifty, I'll give you an extended loan of a kit 18-55 lens.
 
OK, well i'm doing all of my buying used, due to a wedding I'm apparently involved in.

In the next month or so, I can have a good look at both, maybe even buy both, if ebay is kind.

I really like Karl Taylors use of wide angle lenses in portraiture but tbh, I'd have no idea where to start with lenses so help would be really appreciated.

Yeah, don't worry about saying thanks for my offer, it's not a problem. You could actually benefitted from someone being pleasant, but..........

to be honest you don't really need anything else (if you are going to do a wedding a second body would be handy) - apart from the kit lens to cover moderately wide angle you might deciode you want something like a 10-20 or a samyang 8mm fish , but i wouldnt rush at that.

also in the fullness of time if you are going to do a lot of potraits you might want a longer fast prime like the 85mm f1.8 - these tend to hold their value second hand and you can get nearly as good a deal from the likes of kerso for a grey import new.

What does Grey Import mean?:thinking:
 
I you like your landscape shots wide angle lenses are amazing! They're not going to break the bank either. I've got a sigma 10-20mm jobbie, and it's ace! Have a look around eBay, etc as there are always loads about.
 
grey import is items that are brought in from abroad (where they are substantially cheaper) you usually dont get a full manufacturers waranty (although you do with kerso) and the importer usually offers their own 12 month waranty instead.

The usual suspects are Kerso (aka flashcamera), UR Galaxy, panamoz, Digital Rev, and Big Norman - there are loads of others but once you step away from the established set the chances of being scammed increase significantly.
