My Canon 500D arrived this morning! Too bad I'm at work until 5pm! Really looking forward to getting home and figuring out how to use it properly now :) can't wait to get started!

On another note, I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile purchasing a 50mm lens, as has been recommended to me on here. Like I've said, my main subjects will consist of landscape, wildlife (mainly birds) and people.

Once again, any advice is much appreciated :)

I presume someone is at home to have taken delivery.. I would contact them and ask them to open it and charge the battery for you... otherwise you will be staring at an unusable camera for an hr or two :)
 
I got a 50mm f1.8 not long after my camera & kit lens and it certainly helped me to learn about depth of field and what it's like to shoot with a fixed focal length.

It's quite long on a crop sensor though, which was frustrating, and the build quality isn't amazing. See how 50mm looks on your kit lens. But it's certainly worth considering IMO.


I'd get a bag & some memory cards first and get out there and enjoy learning your camera for a few weeks. Get to grips with the basics before introducing more variables.

Thanks for that MatW. I'll do that first-get the hang of the basics before buying lenses etc for it :) I've got a bag for the camera too, and plenty of memory cards just waiting to be used!
