I got the replacement and the difference is like night and day! Same settings, same shutter speed, same technique and it performed slightly better than my 30D in tracking birds in flight.
Both cameras checked out fine in my af tests on static objects, both near and far away. With the replacement i got more keepers in the first 5 shots than i did with the other one in 230 shots
No idea how that works but i'm glad it's sorted.
I just feel sorry for anyone who's learning to use Servo AF and has a body that inexplicably doesn't perform like that.
