My D4 arrived today

No idea, he just simply stated he's spoken with NPS and they said the slight play is normal

I got mine yesterday, and I remember thinking that the cover was quite tight! No play here....

Awesome bit of kit all round though. What are you guys/gals doing for screen protection?

Nothing. Never used screen protectors!

I hear you, but the D4 screen almost seems 'proud' to the extent that I'd be worried about it aking a knock. With the plastic screen protectors I had no quarms placing the body on it's back to quickly change lens (not long enough for stuff to fall into the body though). Won't be doing that with the D4!

I shudder at the idea of placing the camera down on it's back to change lenses :D

I was thinking more about keeping my sensor dust OCD at bay having it facing up in to the world :D

Ah yes I agree on that one. I used to loosen caps and then perform the swap with (usually) less than a second of exposed body. I try to be as oranised as an F1 pitstop. However there was always those enevitable times where the equivalent of a dropped wheel nut happened and it was always less than graceful.

The particular dance I go through trying to change lens where no flat/clean surface exists on location is always entertaining and always leaves me wishing I had four arms (or a full-time assistant)!

I think the D4 will be treated with kid gloves for a while and then put to some proper mucky work eventually. :)

There is one slightly anoying behavioral thing; although it may not be related specifically to the D4. I never owned a D3 so the dual card slot functionality is very welcome, however when I specify the CF card (8GB) as the secondary (JPEG) and the XQD (16GB) as the primary (RAW) it shows both thumbnails upon playback. I have an army of fast 8GB CF cards so I'd ideally not want to purchase more 16GB ones to store RAW+RAW, however having two image previews is slightly annoying.

The manual is not very specific on the subject and merely states that when recording RAW+JPEG with a single card that only a single thumbnail will show. This is the behavior I'm after but with two cards not one. hhmm.

so then... Those people that have them...

Is it worth the cash over a D3s??? I have 2 on pre order neither of which I've heard anything about as yet, if the changes are minimal I'm tempted to change my order

I think it's something only you can answer. I can fully appreciate why, to a lot of people, it's not worth it looking at specs on paper. But using it and reading about it are very different.

The differences are subtle, but they are numerous, enough so that in use it feels like a new camera and not just the incremental upgrade some make it out to be.

If you have the cash and can afford it, then it's a better camera, no doubt. But the D3s was (and is) such a good camera that unless some of the new features are 'must haves' then you wouldn't be at a huge disadvantage by keeping what you have now.

So to sum up. I've not made it any clearer for you

And to add further confusion for you, I totally agree with Richard. I've not owned a D3s but I've used them. 1080p was a big draw for me, so it suited what I needed it for.

For all intents and purposes the noise levels at high ISO are the same as the D3s, which given the increased pixel density is an improvement worth applauding. The people expecting a gazillion stops better performance in low light whilst increasing the MP count are a bit deluded.

It's a large investment over a D3s, and given that I'm not a full-time photographer I had to take a second to seriously consider if I actually needed it. (Which is very unlike me). I'm very happy with my choice and I'm sure anyone actually using one on a daily basis would be too.

Just had a little play with the in camera HDR function. I don't shoot JPEG and I doubt I'll use the HDR function much, but seeing as I'd done some HDR in the past I thought I'd give it a go. Nothing scientific, just a snap from my bedroom window.

Both shots F/11 ISO800 1/80 with the HDR smoothing set to normal for the first one. No processing other than the in camera jpeg malarky. Lens was Nikon 50mm 1.4 AF-S

For those that might be interested, I just posted a mini review/comparison of the D4 v D3s. It's just a few observations based on first few weeks of owning.

Also, it has RAW downloads for the files of the ISO 12800 images I posted further up this thread.

Full review will follow in a few weeks once I've spent a lot more time using it, and have come back from a weeks photography in Belarus.

Been told by Jessops, that mine should arrive next week. Fingures crossed. I've been using my D300 for the last 2 weeks in France. Quite enjoyed it actually. I hadn't used it for ages prior to that.

Kev.

lol Kev, in fairness Jessops have been telling me that since the start of March!

Kevshore do you know what number you are in the waiting list? They tell me that they have been only getting 2 body's each week for the last 2 weeks. Now they are saying they should get stock at the end of the month. TBH i cannot be bothered with mine now because by the time Jessops send them out it will be end of wedding season for melol.

Amen - was saying that just now.

I have no idea where I am, only that i ordered on Jan 10th.

Its like a revolving 2 week delay. They are firmly blaming Nikon though.

But of course sir we are the biggest camera retailer in UK and we will of course get a more priority service and all backorders filled quickly...

DONT tell him that!! , im sure that he said that there was 49 on order when he placed his order. He wont be a happy bunnie :D

They told me on Friday, that the store that I had ordered from, had 4 customers that had paid up front for theirs. I am one of them.
They are giving those customers priority when stock arrives. Then customers who have paid deposits.
They are SUPPOSEDLY getting 5 in this week. I live in the real world though. I'll get excited when they phone me to say that it's arrived. Not until then.

Kev.

Bet you'll be up the hills of wales soon after you pick it up ?

With all due respect to Jessops - they might be the largest camera retailer in the country but they are by no means the most important to any of the major brands - and certainly when it comes to pro kit they are well down the pecking order.

Their management are deluded if they really think that they will clear a 100+ body backorder quickly, and their store managers likely being fed a load of crap to keep their customers on the hook for their deposits. Blaming Nikon is just an easy way out to placate you.

I'd say that a couple of bodies per week is likely to continue for at least another couple of months while NPS orders worldwide are filled and supply builds. After all they are only making 5000 a month... spread that across the world and it gets pretty thin.

If you are NPS you would almost be better off trying one of the Nikon Pro retailers like LCE, Calumet, Grays etc who will get priority over Jessops all day long.

I know that, that was their patter when I complained though :)

I get the lesser price though for preorder and a new battery, might aswell just sit it out. Nothing really wrong with my d700 im just impatient.

Well that is fair enough.

Now you are "saving" £650 instead of £150 and if you don't critically need the D4 over the next few months then you may as well stick rather than twist with another supplier.
