I'm upgrading to a DSLR in a few weeks and having decided on a Canon 60D with 17-85mm IS USM for £1,039 I have just found out Jessops price match a particular website.

This has bought the Nikon D7000 with 17-105mm VR (at £1,060) within my budget.

Now I don't know what to do! I've handled both cameras, and I prefer the feel of the Canon. I felt at home with it straight away. BUT...the Nikon is a better camera on paper...albeit only slightly.

The kits lens on the Nikon isn't quite as good as the 17-85mm Canon IS USM, and I'd find the flip out screen on the Canon quite useful, but would it be foolish to go for the Nikon with it's superior AF system and faster burst rate and hope that I get used to the feel of it?

I know i'd be chuffed to bits with whichever one I choose, but I really am now in a bit of a quandry!
 
I'm a Nikon guy through and through....primarily because I much prefer how they handle compared to Canon. I have a D3, D2H and D300. The D300 offers significanty better IQ than the D2H but I much prefer using the latter because it handles so much better. I think you've probably answered your own question.....go with the body that you are comfortable using (even if it is a Canon!).
 
If the Canon feels comfortable, stick with it. Also do any of your other friends have a DSLR and if they do which one Canon or Nikon.

The reason I ask is if they have a Nikon and are happy to share their lens it may be better going for a Nikon.

Unfortunately sep9001 I don't know anyone else at all with a DSLR so I can't even use that to help me make my mind up.

However, I amm 99% going to stick with my original choice of the 60D with the 17-85 IS USM lens.
 
I'd go for the canon as that's my area of experience and I have that lens and love it to bits it's a great lens and focal length

As you have said you feel most comfortable with the canon that would be the one to go for IMO

If you prefer the feel of the Canon, then buy it. Get what you prefer not what others like.

All of the cameras can take good photographs, you will make them great.

Might be worth getting the 60D body only and getting a used 15-85 IS to go with it?
Plenty of people say the 15-85 is a real improvement over the 17-85 for image quality.
 
As above, go with what feels best.

Paper specs are only good for telling your mates how good your camera is, it's the pictures you produce with it that really count, and if you find one system more intuitive you will produce better images with it.
 
Liking the replies! Thanks a lot folks, you've been a big help. Will decide about the 17-85mm or a used 15-85mm nearer the time.

Hi, newby here, glad I saw this, as I have been convincing myself to get the 60D, I've been up convincing myself from a super zoom then 550D to 600D then back from the 7D (due to not having SD cards), I ordered one from Camerabox, stupid me! Waiting for visa to recover my money! Grr.. But as soon as I'll get the 60D
 
I'm a newby to TP and am struggling with a similar decision. Want to upgrade from a 400d. there is a lot of chatter and comparisons between 600d, 60d, and 7d. My inclination is towards the 60d. I did think about other formats and brands but as I have a number of lenses thought best stick to Canon Dslr. I guess there are only 2 questions left. Is the 60d too big a step up for a relatively inexperienced photographer?, and where can I find a 60d at a good price from a trustworthy source.

Any views on either point welcomed.
 
I think that for a hobbyist that ergonomics and aesthetics are the primary concern of choosing a camera body. Same for a lot of things like laptops and cars. Even though the paper performance of something might be slightly below that of a similar one the pleasure of having the one you prefer outweighs anything on paper.

Actually, if you just go by price and personal aesthetical preference you are sure to be onto a winner!
 
Although I totally agree that the D7000 is by far the better camera :nikon: You should get the model that you prefer to handle and canon it will then.
 
I am a Canon man but I completely disagree with 60D and particularly 17-85mm lens, - and at that price! It will leave you wanting much more very quickly

D7000 on the other hand has far superior AF and sensor. I don't know about the lens, but probably its not a miracle either.

If you want canon get 40D, 5D or 1D2 used cheaply, and save your bucks for proper glass
 
Good luck getting Jessops to price match a website, could I ask which one please and have you confirmed it?

Usually only match high st stores within a small radius who must have the item in stock
