After many questions about various things I decided to jump in feet first and try out a HDR image.

ITs not of anything in particular as I was just out and about and I didnt even have my tripod with me. I just decided to give it a whirl.

Used F/4.5 & ISO 100.

I tried to focus on the jeti type thing.

Now I have the image in photoshop I cant seem to adjust any levels or anything, the layer is locked and I cant figure out how to unlock it?

I am flying blind a little on this one mind, I just wanted to give it a whirl.

Any hints / comments welcome!

Have you merged images in Photoshop with this image? It could be that you have saved it as a 16bit or 32bit file click image/mode/8bit and see if that works.
It's difficult to tell from your post just what you have done to achieve your first HDR

Ooh, Belfast port. It doesn't look like it's got any extra range to me. Did you shoot multiple exposures then merge them in Photomatix or Photoshop?

Had a quick play in Photoshop ................. Doesnt seem HDR to me ???

I took about 10 pictures at different exposures then used Tools - Photoshop - Merge to HDR?

Is this not correct?

you might need to change it to an 8 bit or 16 bit image to get the tonal range from it.

photoshop isn't the greatest HDR software either really, pretty much amazing a everything but HDR!

Download Photomatix and shoot at least 3 images using your cameras AEB feature to change the exposures. For example -1, 0 and +1. Its important to be on a tripod to avoid strange artefacts appearing in the merged image.

Here is a recent HDR conversion made from 3 images exposed at -2, 0 and +2. Merged with low strength in Photomatix, then tweaked contrast and saturation in CS4.

wow lol they look much better than my effort :-)

I had flown to belfast thats why i didnt have my tripod, was more of a last minute idea while I was killing time before going to the airport.

Is photomatrix free?

when I took mine I used 10 images ranging from 0.3s to 1/250.

Is this correct or would you normally use like you said -2 - +2 using the Av function?

It's actually the exposure value you need to alter rather than shutter speed. I'd google a tutorial if you're new to it as it can be hard to explain in full and make sense at the same time.
Have a look at http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ for some information and inspiration.
