I am finally making my first trip to the Capital in a couple of weeks for a day.

Having Never been to London, I guess the places I will be trying to visit are all the typical Tourist attractions.

For those who have been with a camera, I am looking for advice on which is the best Lens in my collection to take.

The Camera will be a Nikon D700 and my choices of lens are...

  • Nikon 24-70 f2.8
  • Nikon 70-200 VR f2.8
  • Nikon 50mm f1.8
  • Nikon 18-200 f3.5-5.6 (DX) Will only work in DX mode on D700
  • Sigma 10-20mm Will only work in DX mode on D700

Architecture outdoors and candid shots of the London folk rushing about. But the real winners for me are the indoor shots of the splendid buildings (some of which don't allow cameras though). So I would take a fast lens for the indoor ones. I would take your two nikon 2.8's.

I love using a 50mm when out and about in the city; but for your purposes I would suggest the 24-70 to give you a bit more options.

I would take your 24-70 and the 50 and leave the rest. The 70-200 is just too long for round London most of the time

My choice (and its normally always my choice for a city walkabout) would be the 70 -200...plenty of architectural abstracts and details to be had :) But it depends on what you like to shoot :)

yeah, out of those I would go for the 24-70mm

out of curiosity have you considered switching your 10-20mm for a 12-24mm? Would then work on both D300 and D700, you would lose a bit at the long end but would make a great wide walk-around for either body.

Hmm. A quick check of my Flickr photostream reveals 174 photos taken round London with my 70-200 on a full frame body like your D700.

Far from useless, but I suspect I see a bit like Dark Star - we have some similar shots of the highly coloured ceramic cladding of Renzo Piano's Central St. Giles building, having peeked at his Flickr stream :)

My 50mm does get more use on the street, though.

I guess it's how much you want to lug it around if the Nikon f/2.8 is as heavy as the Canon.

I currently have the exact same dilema as i'm off to London on tuesday.
I have had several different bags packed, unpacked with all kinds of configerations of equipment. Of course the biggest consideration is weight and has to be traded with comfort and having the right lenses for the job in hand.
Now i'm thinking fast and light:
D70s body
12-24 f/4.5-5.6 EX
24-70 f2.8 EX Macro
SB 800 Flash
Monopod

This all fits in my old Lowepro Photo runner with a lightwieght Goretex jacket strapped underneath.

The other option is to add the rest of my kit in a Backpack:
30mm f1.4
100-300mm f/4-5.6
105mm f2.8 Macro
less the Monopod
Add slik lightweight Tripod.

I dont intend staying after 8 or 9pm as i have to catch the train home.

Decisions desicions????????????
