Hi recently taken up this hobby so I can get some decent shots of the girls as the grow up, after some advice on cropping, settings for light room help on exposure etc.

Im using a Nikon D3100 with either the 35mm or the 50mm and I have lightroom 4 to fiddle with the photos although im not great with the program

i think you're still underexposed by a stop or 2! composition is ok because of the crop but try to take the image as close as possible to the final image you have in your head composition wise and don't waste pixels.

Hi thanks for reply's I will have a bash with some higher iso's i'm still not sure about histograms yet never know what to look for :)
 
Start here before you start upping the ISO

Upping the ISO in Av mode would result in the same exposure, but a quicker shutter speed.

I think The problem may be the metering mode... you're taking a reading of the whole scene, and the camera is making a guess. If you use spot metering, you are telling it what to meter for, ie, the girls. So lock your exposure on the girls before recomposing. (Or use manual).
 
Ahh thank you I just checked my metering and ive set it to spot and ill give that a go next time i'm at the park with them :)
