Well i'm after a used camera, (started another thread discussing the canon 350D) which I have now decided I would prefer to go down to the nikon route so scrapped the canon idea.

I'm looking at the D40, thats the camera I have in mind. It goes for a good price, good at high ISO and produces nice results. I also have the D70 in mind, simply for the same sort of reasons.

But which is best, what are the pitfalls of each one?? Any advice much appreciated. I have read review after review :bang: on these now but looking for some real user input.

I find Thom Hogan's reviews to be fairly easy to digest. He rates the D40 highly http://bythom.com/d40review.htm

I have a D7000 so can't comment from personal experience I'm afraid.

I had a D40 as my first camera and absolutely loved it, it produced some absolutely stunning images (it did it all by itself, I have a poor eye when it comes to photography )..I say defo go for a D40

D40 was my learning camera for about a year or so. My best shots are from that nice little camera, though I did take a lot more pictures back then. Its great for what its supposed to do... take pictures. My only two niggles with it is the slow picture playback when zooming in, and not enough autofocus points. (only 3)

Thanks guy, I think I had already made my mind up just looking for some confirmation. I reckon at the price they are selling used it can't be too bad of a camera to start out with and a good starting point. Many of the reviews I have read rate the D40 quite highly.

Just to add further confusion, have you considered the D5000?

I had simon but its out of my budget at the moment. The D5000 is a very nice camera and I have 2 friends who both use one. At the moment i'm looking at the bottom end of the scale for a camera, then maybe throughout the year upgrade the lenses and then maybe next year upgrade the body to something better once I have a better grasp on photography.

I've owned both the D40(x) and D70 and apart from the smaller screen on the D70 I found it to be a slightly better camera and you can use any Nikon lenses on it not just the AF-S versions which have the focussing motor in the lens.
Both really good cameras to learn on though and will produce great images.

Thanks for all the advice guys, i settled on the D40 and have just acquired one through ebay. Looks mint and was a price I think was good for the condition along with the UV lens and 8GB memory card.
Looking forward to getting out with it now (when it arrives) and getting some pictures.
