My lens has some hair in it...

I'm concerned and worried that it might be a scratch also :/ I thought it may be feathers at first because I was taking peacock feather shots but even after sensor cleaning and blowing cold air through it hasn't disappeared.

I heard it costs about £30 to get it fixed from a camera shop I was wondering if I can do it myself, any advice folks?

Are you sure it's in the lens? Have you seen if it's there with another lens? It could just be really stubborn and on the sensor!

What lens is it? I'd be tempted just to pay the £30, the thought of taking something as complex as a lens apart terrifies me! It would never go back together, if it did I reckon I'd be left holding an element wondering where it was supposed to go.......

Im pretty sure that will be on the sensor. It wouldn't be in focus if it was on the lens.

I don't have another lens so I can't try that.

It's an 18-55mm IS kit lens, so it must be inside the camera, i'm scared :(

Thing is that stuff never changes shape either, it's always the same, i'm sure it's feather hairs.

Get a rocket blower, remove the lens and lock the mirror up, then hold the camera with the lens mounth down and use the rocket blower on the sensor, making sure you don't touch anything inside the camera. If that doesn't work you will need something like an Arctic Butterfly sensor brush, or some sensor swabs. Either that or pay £30 and get someone do to it for you.

That's definitely the sensor - nothing to worry about and it's bound to happen now and again. Just don't go doing anything daft like taking a Brillo Pad to the sensor. There's actually no rush to clean it, you can just clone out that bit of hair easily, if you know someone who can clean it for you'd I'd wait if you're not sure what to do. ;)

I use an Arctic Butterfly and never had to use anything else so far.

You can see how some of the dust has moved between the two shots- due to you using the blower no doubt. The Arctic Butterfly holds a static charge and just lifts the dust and hairs away without blowing it elsewhere.

Have a look on Google - they do various kits, but you only need the one brush really. Sensor cleaning is something you'll need to do periodically, so the cost is soon recouped compared to paying 30 quid a time for someone to do it for you.

Watch this video

Notice how when he inserts the brush into the camera, he's very careful not to touch anything except the sensor so he doesn't pick up any minute bits of graphite grease from inside the mirror housing.

Thank you young man very useful

I bought an Arctic B for my 5D. Total waste of money in my case. Go anywhere near the edge of the sensor and it dragged oil across. It took me ages to get it clean again. I used it twice and gave up with it.

You're not helping us by not telling us what you have done when you said you've tried cleaning it.

I had this problem once, I thought the spec's of dirt were on the lens but then it turned out the dirt was on the sensor, this naturally came off when I accidently pressed the button I never use, Live View.

Nothing's cleaning it I need to see a specialist!

Ok Salma, I think people are losing patience and interest here because you're ignoring our questions and not helping us. Two of us - Messiah and myself - have both asked you what have you done to clean it, you've ignored us, and gone all girly, repeating that nothing is cleaning it. You don't need to see a 'specialist' - not for cleaning a sensor anyway. It's only a hair. You've got plenty of dust there too, which you don't seem to have cleaned off either, so your cleaning attempts aren't amounting to much. I've had a bit of pollen stuck to mine that would only come off by scrubbing so hard that the glass squeaked. And no damage was done either. So pull yourself together and answer the damned question before one of us gets really mad.

The reason I didn't answer is because I thought i could fix it.

Get mad go on please.

oh i am so mad now at you guys:nuts:

Messiah I borrowed a rocket from my cousin, the marks are still there i'm worried it might be scratches.

you are using the blower on the sensor ...... not just the mirror you can see when you take off the lens ?

Yes the sensor!!

I'm really confused now :S

are you just blowing on the mirror  if you are thats not the sensor - the sensor is behind the mirror

I don't know what mirror lock up is, i'm not doing this anymore it's too complicated and i'm gonna end up ruining something I think I already did, I can't even see my red focal points anymore :/

sounds like you been trying to clean the wrong bit of the camera and buggered up the reflective coating on the mirror which will cause autofocus issues.

*facepalm*
What method are you using to clean the "sensor"? (as in how do you prepare the camera, rather than what sensor cleaning equipment do you use)
Are you releasing the shutter? I'm guessing as you are not using M-up, you are not even looking at the sensor and looking at the mirror instead as Dogfish suggested.

Oh bloody great, I feel so dumb right now, i'll have to get it fixed now :|

the sensor is behind that mirror - if you look on the menu system you will find mirror lockup that will move the mirror out of the way so you will be able to see the sensor. that hairs that big you will probably see it

I've had the same problem a couple of times in the past, and the method described here has worked for me, no problem at all. Take the lens off, put the camera in mirror lock up, hold it upside down, aim a rocket blower or similar towards the sensor and give it a good few blows, turn the camera off, and put the lens back on.

If the hair is still there, try again and if after a few goes it still won't shift then look into getting an arctic butterfly or sensor swabs, but I haven't needed do that yet and I've had my camera close to 3 and a half years now...

If you don't know what mirror lock up is, look in the manual/Google it!!! :bonk:

Is this mad enough for you! And I'm not a sweetheart. I eat children.

In your recently posted pics of that fizzy drink I can't see the hair at all, just some of the other dust and crap. I can say with 99.835% confidence that you have a hair. It's not a scratch shape, which would be more or less straight. I was about to say that you couldn't have scratched it if you haven't done a wet clean or tried to remove it by a similar dry method. But now you say you don't know what mirror lock up is, so I guess you've only been trying to clean the mirror? This is why we asked you to tell us exactly what you have done when you said you'd tried to clean it.

Find out how to carry out the sensor cleaning function (mirror locked up, shutter open and sensor visible). Then use your rocket blower on the sensor. If you want some links to videos for this process then ask and I/we will sort some out if you can't find any yourself. As well as the usual google for sensor cleaning supplies companies, you should find plenty on youtube.

When you eventually get to the point where you've got your sensor exposed, tried the blower, and it still hasn't worked, then we'll start talking about other methods. You can even borrow my useless Arctic Butterfly, and Visible Dust Sensor Loupe to look at the sensor if you want. But never, ever, touch the mirror.

I'm having to clone the hairs out that's why :(

No, I tried to clean the mirror thingy with those focal point things on it BEHIND the big mirror? I know what you mean, trust me i'm not try to clean the mirror infront, i'm trying to clean the one that's is further back in the camera.

Can you find me a tutorial possible please? I tried to look on google but got nothing :/

Hi,

I am very new to the world of DSLR and was wondering if you would mind finding some links to videos of this process.

If you could I would very much appreciate it.

Take care, Keith

It sounds to me like you are cleaning the focus screen.

I'm sure the manual will tell you how lock up the mirror for cleaning, and maybe some other solutions for removing the dust from your sensor. It only takes a minute to look in the contents page, if not i'm sure theres lots of information on google (as someone has already linked).

Always read up before you start to mess with stuff you dont know about otherwise you might end up screwing it all up.
