I am using a canon 450. And i have the lens that came with it. 18-55mm.
I am doing my regular shoot this friday. Its a club night.
Where i shoot the customers. A couple of crowd shots and the DJ.
Sometime i do bigger events. But generally it always very dark.

I ordered myself the new canon 580 flash. But now i just need a lens. I only have a budget of £300. I was thinking the 18-200 Sigma lens.

What are your views??????

I have just bought a flash. But do you stll recommend 24-70f2.8 lens??/

The auto focus has gone on it..

I'm not being rude, but you are sure you haven't moved the switch to manual aren't you. Sorry, too slow!!!

I would suggest something like a Tamron 17-50 F2.8 for low light, even that may not cut it to well so something like a 50mm 1.8 maybe better (and cheaper) for your needs

its not on manual focus. The switch is on the lens. I have tried other lens and they are fine.

Im thinking the Sigma lens then. 24-70mm f2.8.

What does everyont think?

Will this be ok for group pics??

you need to look the exif of your previous work to decide how much you used the range of the 18-55 and compare that to the 24-70, and cruicially the 18-24mm range. How often do you think a bit more zoom could be useful - the 55mm - 70mm range.

Alternatively you could get another 18-55mm IS for about £ 100.

sigma 24-70mm 2.8 or a Tamron 17-50 F2.8????

Whats the differnence between a starting at 24mm to the Tamron 17mm...??

How will it affect the pictures.. ?

i was happy with the 18-55. But of course a bit more range it always good.

How does having a lower mm start help..?

You recommeded the 24-70 how will that be different to my 18-55mm . I know i will have more zoom but what does starting at 24mm do...???

I'm guessing you don't really understand focal lengths at all.

18-55 means 18mm to 55mm
therefore

17-50 will be very similar range to what you're currently using. Fractionally wider at the wide angle lens, and fractionally shorter at the longer end.

24-70 will be less wide at the wide angle end but longer on the other end.

http://www.tamron.com/lenses/learning_center/tools/focal-length-comparison.php is a useful tool

hmmm the 24-70mm is Ok on my 5D but that's full frame. With the crop factor on your 450D (I can't remember what it is 1.3 or 1.5?) you might find it's not as wide as you would like.

You could replace your lens for about £112 (was the price I found) and get a 500mm f1.8 for low light stuff. £69 for that.

Or you could look at a 17-85mm Canon, better built than the 17-55 but still not f2.8.

I'm not that familiar with Tamron so I'll leave that one to those who are. :)

Put your broken lens on the camera. Focus manually. Set it to 24mm and look through viewfinder. This would be the widest a 24-70 would go.

A 2.8 lens would give as a bonus a brighter viewfinder which assists focussing accuracy, higher quality images due to the way lenses are made and you could use the f2.8 for creative DOF effects to isolate the subject from the background more.

Well it depends on how wide you usually shoot! If you usually shoot using the mm of around 18-24 then get the tamron 17-50, if you dont usually go below 24 then get the 24-70! no use asking what is best for your pictures, as it depends what you normally shoot!

Not 'bad' but it means you need to adapt to the lens. You will be restricted to the wide angle end but have more freedom at the other end. Put your faulty lens on the camera, set it to around 24mm and focus manually. This is as wide as a 24-70 will go. If you can work with that, then a 24-70 will be OK, if you need wider a 17-50 or 18-50 would be more suitable for you.

I still maintain a f2.8 lens would be worth investing in, its just choosing the focal length that fits your style and needs best.

what would you go for then?

You need to follow andrewc's advice in his earlier post in order for you to make a better informed decision.

I've only ever used the Tamron and it's an excellent lens. I'm sure the Sigma is equally good though...

Wow, I may just switch to canon for one of those!

Oh b*******! :D I was typing too quickly and had to go to the tip with my old printer. I had a ceremony as I launched it into the skip. No mean feat for one so small with such a large printer.

And for the OP, if you don't know the focal lengths or apertures and what they do, go and buy another lens the same until you know what you are doing, otherwise you are spending money you might regret.

If you were happy with the 18-55, get another 18-55.

When you did use the 18-55, what would you have liked to improve?

there is a brand new one (split from kit) for sale on the classifieds, has the IS as well....
