Been having a few probs with the Mac mini so i reformatted the HDD and re installed OSX. I am more or less back up and running again (phew!) and everything seems to be spot on! I can't get my BT Yahoo mail to work and i know there is a prob with that and a fix but i can't remember what the fix was. I think it was something to do with the SMTP address which had to be changed. Anyone got any ideas?

I have had to dump some software as it wouldn't load so i'm going to have to find alternatives. The software i had was [cough]dodgy[/cough] but it has all ended up in the bin! I have replaced Photoship with Gimp but need a web design prog to replace Dreambeaver. Again, any ideas chaps?

Just about to load all my music into iTunes now..... Wish me luck! I may be some time!!!!!
 
I had a quick look at iWeb last time the mac was running and it looked like you couldn't place things where you wanted. I only had a quick glance so perhaps a tutorial may help me!! I'll also have a look at rapidweaver.

Ok, I have done as requested, Pop3 is ok but the SMTP outgoing is not working. My settings are:
Description : SMTP
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com (use only this server box is ticked)

Use Authentication box is ticked:
User name: andrew.west17@btinternet.com (and i tried andrew.west17)
Password: my password

It takes about 7 mins to check and comes back with an error message saying the usual error message: Trying to log into the SMTP server "mail.btinternet.com" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct (which they are) then click continue. If the information isn't correct, you cannot send email.
 
OK now I've seen evidence for both settings on the net lol, but still worth a try.
 
I have tried EVERYTHING!! and still no joy. I spent about 3 hrs trying to sort it out to no avail, reading tutorials and other forums to find an answer but nope......poo!

Hey ho so i'm back on my reliable everything works how i want it PC. I tells ya this Mac stuff is doing my head in.
 
what mail program are you using? Apple Mail, or?

It "should" auto configure.

incoming:mail.btinternet.com
SSL:on

outgoing:mail.btinternet.com
SSL:off

Set up a GMail account :shrug:

I swap and change that much and always want access to my emails wherever i am it made sense to use GMail, and it auto-configures on OSX ;)
 
Hi,

You had to reformat your Mac Mini's hard drive? You've not had it that long!! Something not right there then in having to do that. Most people I know that bought one just turned it on, and it auto configured most things for them like wireless networking, screen size and display settings etc.

Pretty sure i have tried all the above. I'll have another go when i build up the energy and when i don't hate the damn thing so much :lol::lol::lol:

When you enter a gmail address and password Mail knows the rest of the settings. Works with other popular services too.
I had to go into my gmail settings and enable pop though, that was all it took to get it working.
Mail checks 3 different accounts for me (one has multiple addresses) and it all works perfectly.

I have had enough of the mac and it has gone back. Either it went back or i went to stay in a psychiatric ward!:cuckoo:

It wasn't just mail but a host of stuff that equated to it being far inferior to what i have on Windows.
 
i reckon the mail thing was just btinternet's stupid settings - what else was wrong andy?
 
It was BT and not the Mac, it's a known 'problem' but all fix's i read and tried didn't work.

Not having the software i wanted just made me feel like the mac was not as good as my windows PC. People say Macs are easier to use ec etc but i don't find windows a problem, it never fails, everything works, i don't download the world and it's mother so the system stays running well, i have AVG and so far (touch wood) i have not suffered from any viruses and at the end of the day my PC is just better.

However i was desperate to get on with the Mac and i wanted to love it but it's just not that great. iTunes was a complete nightmare! I feel sad to send it back but it's just not for me i'm afraid.
 
When i imported my music to iTunes from my external HDD it doubled and in some cases trippled the files plus it wrote them back to my external HDD so i had to sit there for 3 hours deleting the coppies that were all over the place. I think there were over 3000 files i had to delete! plus i had to make sure i deleted the correct file, for example i would have My Music/Elbow/Seldom Seen Kid/Mirrorball.mp3 which would be fine. After importing to iTunes i would also get My Music/Elbow/Seldom Seen Kid/Mirrorball 1.mp3 or My Music/Elbow/Seldom Seen Kid/Elbow-Mirrorball.mp3. Most bizarre!
 
yeah i had that problem when i first got my mac, because i assumed it would keep just link to the mp3's and not move them.

iTunes copies them into its own directory, so I've you already placed them in there it will recopy and put them in there again. As for why it copied them back to your external.. I'm not sure why, maybe it's because you've set this as your iTunes directory, so the same reason as above?

You seem to be having alot of problems with your mac? I pretty much just turned mine on and updated it.
 
If i had a mac and was starting from scratch ( and didn't have a BT Yahoo account!) then i'm sure it would be a painless and fruitfull experience but not for me sadly. I'm annoyed as it prommised so much and again if starting from scratch i'm sure it would deliver. Maybe i'll try again another day.
 
i do have a bt yahoo account hanging around in cyberspace - never tried importing it through a mail app though.
