Cant believe what my mate has just told me, he has always wanted a focus st (mid life crisis) as he still believes he is a big boy racer. He is 48 & still spent loads of his old normal focus by adding struts & clear rear light lenses etc.

Anyhow he gets his beloved ST about 3 months ago & is now wanting the garage to have it back off him for the same money he paid because, get this, it is far too thirsty to run, his insurance is £500 PA & his road tax is too expensive!!!:bang::bang:

Now this bloke had been a pro driver all his working life & he didnt realise these things before he got it, what did he think a 400 odd BHP car was going to be like:bang::bang:

Bless him!

i have ha two of them from new and they can go down as low as 6mpg on full boost
mine never really averaged more than 19mpg
add to that the fact that they depreciate by 500-00 a month from new and eat tyres every 6000 miles plus most people have finance on them your looking at a focus that costs a grand a month to run
whats he done to hit 400bhp as thats a fair bit more than the 225 as standard

Apart from the cost - did you enjoy them?

yes i loved every minute of owning them
shame somebody else did as well and pinched the last one from my driveway

That's not too bad - I've had 10mpg out of a non turbo 2.0l, that's why I'm back in a 1.6, I can't afford fun any more! :D

Where'd you get 400bhp? An ST is 225bhp from a 2.5T5 Volvo engine. RS is 301bhp.

Well the problem as far as I can see is as follows

If you drive a Focus with 400bhp, then you have the running costs of a 400bhp car, that's heading in to M3 territory...so expect it to cost as much as an M3 to run. You can't expect a tuned car to run the same as a 1.6 diesel, I think people forget this.

Pour enough BS in almost any car's fuel tank and it'll get close to 400BHP - at least, until someone calls your bluff and asks to see the proof!

Yeah I was starting to think along these lines, it seems too much of a gain to be made without spendidng thousands on tuning:shrug:

Either way though, if they can go to 6mpg on full boost its going to be expensive, makes my old off road Land Rover seem very economical that:D

I have a friend like this but he got a Civic Type R, but sold it for a lot less than he bought it for 5 months previous.

Some people have more money than sense with cars

Been there with subarus in the late 90's, pushed it to 425bhp spending probably 15k on top of what was a 25k car, lasted 3 months before blowing it up lol.

Was fun to drive, but a tank full of super unleaded every day, plus a £7.95 bottle of octane boost a day just for a 120 mile commute (there and back) was a bit ott.

Had kids since then so bikes and the fast cars are long gone, but I have owned two Mark 1 mx5's in the last six years, great handling (when it's dry), fun to drive, never broken down and I sold both for more money than I bought em for, they also return almost 40mpg and are guaranteed to cheer you up on the drive home down some back roads.

Depends on the mileage, I had a BMW 330d (184 bhp diesel) that did 39mpg and now have a BMW 335i (306bhp petrol) that returns 28mpg.

I do about 10k/year and for me the extra in fuel cost is well worth it for the rare occasion when I get a quiet road to enjoy the new car.

Second hand car prices are crazy at the moment, there are cases around of people being offered more money than they paid a few months previous so who knows your mate might be lucky.

A Focus RS MP350 in normal driving is no more expensive to drive fuel wise than a standard RS and not much worse than a standard Focus ST.

As far as being as cheap as a 1.6 deisel, for me deisel is the way to go if you want to tune a car. I have a Mondeo ST TDCi. 155bhp as standard and I have averaged almost 60mpg over a tank a few times, worst has been about 48mpg. I've since fitted a decat pipe and a larger intercooler, so I reckon it is at around 165-170 bhp but alot more torque and hence better fuel consumption, same amount of pressure on the accelerator produces much quicker acceleration but with less fuel used so no change in consumption, if anything it's better. Yesterday, I had a full performance exhaust system fitted so now looking at around 180bhp and still more torque, Tuesday the car gets remapped to get everything working together nicely, I reckon I'll be looking at around 200bhp.
Cost? Probably about £1000 in total on top of the cost of the car in the first place, but I'd have had to buy a new Mondeo 2.2 TDCi to get similar bhp so I reckon I've saved myself over £15k. Plus I know I'll be getting alot more mpg.

Cost? Probably about £1000 in total

Would that include the increase in your insurance, or are we better not mentioning that?

Insurance renewal with previous company with no mods - £770
Current Insurance with modifications - £451
Mind you, using comparison sites I was only getting 8 quotes instead of 100and then when reading the quotation details most of them didn' tinclude the modifications I stipulated during the searches. Ended up with Aviva who were still about £130cheaper than the cheapest comparison search which, as said, didn't actually include the notified modifications.
