I'm slowly trying to get to grips with my shiny new iMac. A couple of complete novice questions:

1. How do I map a network drive? My iMAC is connected to my wired network just fine and I can see my WHS in the Finder. Its also saved the password in the keychain so thats all fine. But it seems I have to connect each time I want to access it or folders within it, in Windows I would create mapped drives to frequently used folders, is there such a thing in OSX?

2. Do I need any anti-virus software for my MAC. I asked a couple of friends and they said "nah, apples are super secure" which for a windows user seems a scary answer!

TTFN and thanks

Barney

P.S. This thing is amazing. I'm still getting to grips with it (got it on Sat) but so far I'm stunned! Whats amazed me most is installing Parallels and running Windows 7 (I have some apps I use for work which are Windows only) in Coherence mode. Seriously clever stuff!!

Congrats on the new iMac......... still waiting for mine to be shipped :gag::'(

They'll be someone along who can answer your questions soon I'm sure, I best take notes :rules:

I'm not sure on this... I've not tried accessing a windows share from the Mac... I think though, that if you navigate to the drive you want to access, then drag it into places, that might do the trick for what you're after.

As far as I know, there are very few active virus out there for the Mac... there is a couple of virus scanners available... the one I found is ClamAv.. I did have access scanning on, but got fed up every time I downloaded a pile of images from the camera, and it kicked off to virus scan the raw files... So now I've got on demand scanning only... It's useful to have I guess.

System Preferences -> Accounts -> (Choose your account) Login Items -> Choose your network share from the "+", then tick the box next to it.

This question and 364 others are answered in my Mac questions sticky thread :) Just see the wee linky in my signature :)

Oh and I wouldn't bother with anti virus software there isn't an actual virus out in the wild for the mac. There are one or two trojans (these are programs that do something if you run them and and disguised as something else such as a dodgy iWorks09 or something like that)

Click on some empty space in the desktop
cmd + K brings up the connect ot server dialog
Type
SMB://<name or IP address of machine you want to connect to>/<Name of share you want to connect to>

You can add it to your list of favourites too

If you can see it in the RH pane of finder, you can click through to it then, once you've opened the folder, drag the icon from the very top of finder into the places bar in the RH Pane.

You probably don't need AV, unless you're paranoid and easily spooked.
