I have at last managed to put my own web site together.

http://web.me.com/sjelly/SJJ/

Nothing much, but it's a start. Put together really easily using iWeb and the MobileMe package. If I get to grips with it I hope to do some tweaks and then get it hosted "properly".

Any feedback would be useful.

Cheers,
Steve

Well... It looks like a lot of other "made on a mac" sites, for a starters, but leaving that aside...

What is the site for? Is it to get business, or simply a place to showcase your photos?

If it's the former, then I'd suggest dumping anything that doesn't make you money (or potential to make you money), and concentrate on the other stuff.

At a guess, this would be mean removing the motorsport etc galleries, and leaving the portraits and weddings galleries (and making more of them too).

If it's simply a place to showcase your work, then it's fine as it is :)

Cheers matty,

Right now it really is a show case for me. If and when I decide to make it a more professional site, I'll dump a lot of the stuff and focus on a couple of main themes.

I really do need to get some fresh material though !

I like it. Can i just point out something i noticed about your SPG that looks very amateur though.

The first line in the portraits section reads:

I do, in fact, quite enjoy taking pictures of people

Why not just leave out the commas completely? There is no need for them whatsoever. As a reader i am intelligent enough to work out where the clauses are and how the sentence is constructed it without it being rammed down my throat. It's a mistake a lot of people who don't write very often make including myself but it's not until you read someone else's stuff that you realise how bad it looks.

Better still why not replace this entire sentence with the phrase "I absolutely love taking pictures of people". :)

another thing i've spotted. what is the download link all about? Jo - "actually the daughter of a very good friend of mine". Why are you encouraging people to download pictures of her? Seems nuts to me.

Nice work, Steve. As a Mac user, I was interested to see an iWeb site. Was it easy to do? Is it possible to loose the 'Made on a Mac' tag?

I totally agree about focus. I decided early on that motorsport was my thing so I ditched everything else, no matter how tempting it was to throw them into the mix.

Well you may be able to put pauses in the right place, but most won't. As somebody that writes tender responses and quotations for a living, I know how people read, and most wouldn't put the pauses (not clauses BTW) in the sentence so it would be read as I intended.

But thanks for pointing it out.

The "download" button goes in automatically and as yet, I haven't worked out how to remove it....

As long as you make use of iPhoto (which I hadn't, so spent the weekend importing loads of my work into the application) the albums work well.

I found that using Mobileme was easy, and I'm using Life '08, not '09. iWeb has a number of enhancements in the latest version, but it's quite straight forward. I didn't use any 3rd party tutorials, just worked it out by using it.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with decent grammar being used on a website. It's actually quite refreshing.

the design seems fairly smart, but the visited link colours are too dark for the background

oh, and the code is absolutely awful!! :gag:

Apart from the shiny half nibbled apple, I suspect that that is exactly what Matty was referring to in his post. iWeb has atrocious coding; even Front Page was better!!

I am not too keen on iWeb's automatic settings but the site does what you want which is the main thing :) You can delete the Apple logo if you don't want it but the overriding thing for me was also how dark it is.

So Darren, are you suggesting that I should be using a brighter colour ?

To be fair, I'm a believer in simple clean, white websites, but the themes within iWeb 08 are pretty poor, especially the white ones...

(I know, I could invest in iLife 09, but I'm hoping to get a new Apple laptop soon, which will have it anyway.)

And DemiLion, appreciate your comments....

It is personal preference but maybe a little. (iLife/iWorks 11 is due soon :))

OK, I've done a refresh with a white background and after messing around a little I think I prefer it. What say you ?

It's not decent grammar though...... in fact it's pretty bad grammar.

For your information, pauses are used to separate clauses. Clauses are the different parts of a sentence. They fall into four categories: main clause, relative clause subordinate clause and noun clause. Only relative clauses (or any free standing clause) should be separated by a comma. "in fact" will not stand on its own as a sentence so is classed as a subordinate (or dependent) clause, so putting it in the middle of a sentence with pauses either side of it is a definite faux-pas in grammatical terms and makes it read awkwardly.

and here http://www.emeraldinsight.com/authors/guides/write/simply.htm?part=3&PHPSESSID=1kn79eiiobdeh8ud2oapiepv73 (halfway down the page)

I see you've updated your website now anyway..... much better
