My Next Lens

Just purchased a 28 - 135 IS lens from Furtim at a great price.

Now looking to get another good quality lens.

Always loved the 70 - 200 F4 but cant deal with the fact that to get a 2.8 with better image lighting its going to cost me a grand.

Very tempted by the Sigma 70 - 200 APO II at £450 secondhand

I want to get rid of my olf 75 - 300 usm and the 35 - 70 as they are mega old.

Any sugguestions on another good lens

It has to be sharp for longer distance focal length up to 300mm max

I've heard the Canon 70-300mm IS USM, for about £400, is a great lens or even better, you could get the Canon 70-200mm L f/4 USM which is about £500 new or you might be able to pick up a second-hand Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM (which is razor-sharp apparently!) for about £500... then you could get a 2x converter and have a 140-400mm f/5.6 L USM

There is that but i would love to see someone selling there 70 - 200 f2.8 for £500

Ive heard good things about the Sigma 70 - 200 f2.8 saying how sharp it is and the AF is quick with regard to response time.

Tough descision but in another month i might have to get a new lens. that will put me £400 up budget

I suppose an extra month would be £600 and i could get that beloved Canon L Glass

My young padawan at work uses a 70-300 IS USM and it's a corker. The IS is brilliant (a bit of a crutch at times) and the image quality is superb, maybe dropping off the slightest bit at the long end, but you only notice when you zoom right in. We blow shots up to a DPS in our mag and they look fine. If anything though, the focussing is let down by the crap body we use (a 30D) - stick it on a 40D or a 50D and it's blindingly accurate. For the money, although it's not the fastest long zoom around, it's brilliant.

I have a Siggy 70-200mm f/2.8 for my Nikon and it's good, real good but i do have issue with mine at the long end (think my body needs recalibrating). For portraits and closer long lens work it is a fantastic lens that has beautiful bokeh when wide open. Fast AF too and the build quality is great. weighs a ton though because of all that glass but it looks the part for sure

If I were you, I'd do what one of my mates did; he had his heart set on a f/2.8 70-200mm Canon but instead, got the f/4 version, pocketed the change and bought himself a 550EX and a 10-20mm with the saving. He can't find anything wrong with the lens - it's testament to its quality that it's constantly regarded as a five-star lens and at a rock-bottom price.

Thanks for the advice. My dad will be selling his F4 soon and hopefully to me when he retires he is going full L glass only issue is he retires in next year. Another year to wait. Wouldnt mind a nice L glass short lens something like 24 - 70 or 24 - 105 or event 17 - 40 just i bought a 28 - 135 IS i dont want to not use. Hmmmmmmm
