I hope I'm ok doing this (mods please advise if this isn't allowed).

I've finally got my ass in gear and sorted out a Facebook page to share my Urbex photography. If anyone wants to have a look ( and like and share...) this is the link

https://www.facebook.com/UnseenDecayNI/

It's a real passion of mine so I hope you all like it!

Looks good! I'll 'like' it when I can log into facebook later - my works computer is a bit iffy when it comes to things like that. My urbex stuff on facebook is here: https://www.facebook.com/theviewfromthenorth

Some very cool images and places you have there.

Indeed :)

Two things then that intrigue me about these sorts of discoveries & shots

1 - how the Hell do you find them? I've walked many a street close to me and there's nothing like these

2 - are you breaking your way into these properties? And if so, and some nice Plod arrives, would you actually get into trouble or does no-one really care cos its all crap anyway?

Cheers

Finding them is a combination of using Google maps, getting tips from other explorers, and a huge amount of luck!

You'd be surprised how many places like this there are though once you start looking for them though.

Gaining access is surprisingly easy. Because many of the places I explore are rural most are rarely locked, or they're simply so forgotten that doors have fallen off or rotted away. Sometimes vandals will have provided a way in by smashing a window or the like.

I'd never break into anywhere though, I dont mind trespassing if I can get in, but if a place is secured then I leave it alone. I've heard stories of people using bolt cutters etc but no-one I know personally would do anything like that.

Ive been asked by the police once what I was doing while wandering around an old church ( they saw my car and were curious) but once I explained what I was doing and showed them that all I had in my bag was my camera they were happy enough. I've had the same thing happen to friends. Usually the worst that will happen is they can get escorted off a site. I think charges would be a very rare occurrence.

20 years ago I'd have agree with you, but in the area where I live, house prices and a desire to make money has resulted in the more picturesque empty houses being acquired and renovated, and the dull ones being flattened & rebuilt.

As a kid in London I loved exploring derelict and unused buildings and sites, and at that time there were plenty around. I do recall being chased occasionally.

I suspect that may be where I'm going wrong then, and thanks for the other points clarifying too - cheers

Although I was told about an abandoned warehouse in Sheffield that's not too far for an explore :)

Some great images there. They really make you think about the people that lived there and what happened for them to be abandoned like that.

There are hundreds of old houses like this around here (South West Wales). We come across them all the time when out walking but have never ventured into one for fear of the whole damn thing collapsing on top of me.

Then the obvious solution there is for you to not go alone, and be brave :)

And if it does collapse and maim or kill you, it'll be safer for the 2nd tog to photograph your broken body too - simples

I can see the appeal but I'd find it all a bit too sad and upsetting.

I remember having a bit of a melt down once when me and my GF passed a house that was being cleared and everything was going into a skip. Seeing someone's lifetime of personal possessions being either skipped or slowly decaying in an also slowly decaying property is a bit too much or a reminder of our short stay in this world for me.

It can be sad sometimes. There was one house in particular that had a hospital bed, a lot of religious items, and a bottle of Holy Water from Lourdes. I'm pretty sure someone spent their last days there.

Really thought provoking. We did a project once in an old rundown house, very similar sort of thing to the one with the amazing chair & slippers. Will browse a bit better later (y)

Ooh I like that.

The HDR is used to good effect with this genre.

I have a mate who really wants to find some old places and do this.

May be a good test for the new X-T2.

Good work Greg.
