is a Fufifilm A350, bought a few years back.I've never liked it, menu-wise or image quality.Are there any compacts out there with very good image quality and which will operate in low light conditions? Thanks.:)

You will always need a flash

If you need a flash and want good photos, you need an external flash that you can aim.

This is true with DSLRs and all cameras.

Anything else will just leave you disappointed.

Err well that's a load of *******s!

You can use flash however another thing is high ISOs. While most compacts won't be great you need to look for ones with the best high ISO quality. What is your budget?
 
Even with high iso, you will have slow shutter speeds so anything moving will be blurred.

You need a fast lens, which you won't get on a compact

The photo in that link I posted was taken at f/2.4, ISO 800 (you can see the noise) and a 1/17 shutter speed. You can also see the lack of sharpness due to movement.

Do some research. Its very hard to get good photos in low light due to movement and slow shutter speeds.

Don't buy and hope
 
Sometimes you don't want to use a flash and 1/60 sec might just be fast enough...

I'd agree that most compacts are pretty useless at high ISO levels but the best of the bunch do a reasonable job. I have acceptable shots from my LX5 at ISO 3200 1/60 second. Doubtless these shots wont stand up to a heavy crop and close scrutiny but as whole image shots at a reasonable size they are ok and if you have heroic processing skills ISO 12,800 is available.

If willing to move up a bit more in size as well as cost a GF1 or similar will provide better results.
 
a DSLR then.IF I want low light eg concerts,dusk shots of e.g. car.
When one path closes another closes too.
