Im gutted. First of all its 100% not user error because when I spoke to them they had exactly the same problem I did apart from it was back foccussing instead of front focussing on their D70, either way it still had a problem.

I will say though Sigma's actual customer service has been fantastic, when I said I really need the lens back they got it done that day, well at least they tried.

Im off to Egypt Monday so will take it with me then I guess i'll have to send it off again. I don't know how they are going to fix it though if they couldn't the first time.

While I was wrinting this I had an idea- go and test it on my D300, so thats what I did. It was much better maybe even perfect because I couple of times it could have been user error.

So could it have been my D700 all along? My 28mm AI-S works fine on my D700 but I suppose if there is a problem its with the auto focus.

Dear oh dear. Im happy because I can use my Sigma on my D300 when I go to Egypt monday but I do wish all this would be sorted. I also don't know why the lens would have a problem on their D70's but not so much on my D300.

Ok rant over :)

Strange that Luke...just a thought could be the contact pins on the lens. One could be failing to make contact on the D700, but catching fine on the D300.

Anyway have a good trip, and remember we are here if you have any problems ... :D

D700s are rubbish, pop it in the post and ill throw it away for you

There is a very strong possibility your D700 is out.

Send it to Nikon and ask for a "body depth test and adjust" and this will sort you out.

Sigma in the old days used to actually adjust the body, but they can't do that nowadays (they can adjust a D70, D100 etc but not a D700).

Maybe that, well im going to London on Thursay ( I think) and im going to take the D700 and try it with anoth 50mm prime, then once and for all I will know if its the camera or not, could even be a problem with both. I spoke to Ricky at Sigma earlier and he did say it was strange because there was a problem with it on the D70. He said it might be that the D70 had a similar tolerance to the D300 which is why it could be working on that, even though all cameras should really be the same.

Yeah I think this is what im going to do after my holiday, im quite happy though that I can use it on my D300 for portrait stuff and keep my 28mm on the D700 for landscapes.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Great lens though. I've just noticed that it has alot more CA on my D300 than D700. Is this normal?

I haven't noticed any more on my D300, although given the D700 low-pixel density, I can see how you would see less.

What sort of CA

1) Purple fringing? (should'nt have much if any)
2) Red / Blue CA (should'nt have much if any)
3) bokeh CA (purple / green in bokeh) - some, due to aspheric elements

red and green fringing, not on everything, just shiny stuff. I havn't done any major tests, just something I noticed. It's basically gone by 2.8 but bad wide open. Strange but im not going to worry about it.
