For me his face just isn't sharp enough and it also requires crop.

A tad over exposed but not too bad.

Thanks, i'm actually struggling to get the faces on my portraits sharp. I'm focussing on the eye, how could I improve this?

If you post your Exif data we can start there to try and help you.
But off the bat it looks like the focus is on your sons chest so may be set on more that one AF point or are you recomposing ?

There is currently one af point set and I made sure to keep it on the eye as I took the shot, although I do agree that the focus looks to be on his chest. F2.0, 1/1250, ISO 100

perhaps the lens is front focusing? You could try a few tests i suppose
