"n" modem routers

Having just spent 30 mins sending some large attachment emails I've decided to upgrade my g router for an n version.

Have looked at the apple version but it's only a router not a modem/router. Has anyone had experience with any of the other ones on the market ( BT not cable)
 
Upgraded to 'n' about 4 months ago. Went for a Linksys Cisco one as they are top notch quality. They produce the white papers which are subsequently passed down to Belkin etc so logic would equate that Linksys will be of better quality.

I'm achieving much faster speeds but more importantly a 100% strength signal through about 3 walls (compared to 48% with the 'g' router). Never fails either so pretty happy with it! Oddly enough, the signal strength was about 86% for the first few days but steadily increased to 100%. I did play about with the channels though. :)
 
I have had a Dlink one for a few years and thats been fine.I did have a small problem where my Macbook would drop connection after a few minutes but that was down to not having the latest router firmware(so make should you update that).
Draytek are very very good but expensive.

Just a quick note. The router is unlikely to make much impact on your speed of sending email. Your G rated modem/router will happily work at speeds upto 54Mbps between the router and your pc. However, you probably have a limit of something like 2Mbps from the exchange to you router....And, even worse when it comes to sending emails.... you probably have a limit of about 256Kbps (or, 0.25Mbps) from your modem/router to your exchange.

All the above is maybe too technical, in simple terms;
Upgrading from G to N - no impact on email uploads!

Adding to Hughes comment, It'll only help distance you can take your laptop wireless and how much data you can transfer locally, ie to another machine on the network.

Another thing to bear in mind is that you'll need a WiFi card/dongle on your computer which supports 802.11n as well as the router. The newer Macs support it (older Intel Macs might support it but require the 802.11n enabler; £2 or so from the AppleStore) but PCs are dependant on the adapter installed.

your wireless speed (unless your signal is particularly rubbish) will not be the cause of your slow emails.

what are you classing as "large attachments"?

EDIT: I should have mentioned the reason for my previously slow speeds was related to my signal strength, as already mentioned the hardware has minimal impact of speed as it's primarily determined by:

- Internal quality of the telecoms wiring in your house (use the service connection on your BT jack to check this)
- The distance from your house to the exchange
- The quality of cabling from the exchange to your house
- the maximum speed your BT line can support (obviously!)

Also, your microfilter can also cause problems as can the quality of the ADSL cable going from your BT Jack to your Modem - especially if using extension cables (better to have another BT Jack installed).

I have to agree with the comments re making emails go faster - it won't help. However, if you want faster speeds on your internal network and greater range then N will help. I went for the Belkin Vision and it's great. Big plusses for me were that it has gigabit ethernet ports built in and a very handy "guest" mode which is activated by the press of a button. It allows you to give internet access to visitors without allowing access to your home network.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like the controlling factor is the email server. As far as the large attachments are concerned they were a string of 4Mb files. They had to be sent as a string as the recipients server has a top limit of this per message.

If I need to do this again I think I'll use one of the proprietary file forwarders such as Sendspace or Mailbigfile..
