naive Photographer gets moaned at

What the h**l, no one is obliged to reply and someone else may have been thinking about this too, not to mention many questions of this type have posts added which lead to productive discussions. That's my view anyway.

Not obliged to reply, but clicking through a topics to read and finding: (this is just an example, it doesnt happen on TP very much... yet... but does happen on other forums.)

"Where can I find a D90 Manual"
"Where can I find cheap camera stuff?"
"Canon or Nikon?"
"Nikon or Canon?"
"What is depth of field?"
"What is a shutter speed?"
"Anyone have a link to a 450D manual?"
"Which is better, Canon or Nikon?"

These, interspersed with actual topics worth contributing to, makes for tedious browsing.

I'm sure many people think about these things, and have done before, thats why there are enormous amounts of threads dedicated to them already.

Like I said, I'm not asking everyone to become google-fu-masters, but alot of questions can be answered, literally, by typing the question straight into the search box of the forum, or google, as opposed to in a new thread. Sure I dont have to waste my time replying, but I dont want to waste my time trawling through them either, nor do when I actually take the time to search for something, having to trawl through irrelevant things, answered hundreds of times.

Its almost similar to someone asking "Where is Ken Rockwells website?" Well.. um...

There is never an excuse for being rude!!! I've been here a year and generally enjoyed being part of the forum inspite of the rude arrogant folk but lately I've been getting quite fed up with it. I'm genuinely considering moving on. I've come across some extremely nice, helpful folk on here and the rude ones are in the minority but seem to have a following who think their behaviour is fine. It's a bloody photography forum, a place for learning and developing. As a trainer and a nurse I am asked the same questions by new learners all the time and don't mind sharing my first hand experience of things over and over again. I often point them in the direction of a book or othe source of information to back me up but WITHOUT THE RUDENESS AND ARROGANCE!!!

guys, come on, there is no point arguing about whether the place is friendly and welcoming or a pit of cliquey minded egos here on a thread in this way, because you know what, it just encourages people of a similar mindset to join and those that would be fearful of such an attitude to stay away and thats the best way to make sure a minority becomes a majority. :bonk:

If an reply is rude either ignore it or report it, that way the arguments never develop in the first place. Kudos to will87 for his apology.

Like others, I joined here because after looking around it is the friendliest photography forum I have seen. On the Google it side of things it's not always as helpful as as those who use it a lot might think. You learn how to search effectively - eventually. Just because I have a subject that I,m fairly into and know the terms to use in a search doesn't mean a newcomer will. Anyway it's often nicer to just or give a reply on a subject even if its a simple question. I've found people can be a lot more rewarding than a Google page. Let's not forget there was a time with every subject that we were all complete beginners. Without beginners it dies in the end.

There was a similar thread yesterday, where one of the replies was unhelpful and he obviously did not know about the equipment the OP was talking about.
I only reply to questions that I know the answer to, I don't just throw in any old answer just to increase my post count.

so why is it all black when i look through the viewfinder ? google didnt help , just said something about take the bloody lens cap off ,,,whatever that is .....

Back to the topic...............

I do sway slightly in favour of the idea that you should do a quick search first. Here's my reasoning though.

If you put up a post then you limit yourself to taking the replies at face value. Looking that the Canon v Nikon question would you honestly make a buying decision based on the opinions of a few folk on a forum that you (most likely) have not met? Are you going to commit some thousands of pounds investing in a system based on the random number of people who reply? No chance!

Personally I do a heck of a lot of research via other photographers websites, google, strobist, SWPP etc and then I kind of collate all that info and I usually have my answer. I also pick up my camera and try things out, you don't have to be on location to try ideas out, with digital you just delete it!

The one thing that does grate a little on any forum is when students ask those question that you just know is actually their assignment! Well, sorry but part of education is using the ability to find information and learning from that experience, don't expect to have your homework done for you!

You are always going to get some unhelpful folks, it's part of internet life. Ignore them and focus your efforts on those who do tend to contribute in a helpful manner.

I wish some of them would look outside here and realise they are not all that good, no matter how fantastic they think they are.

I don't think, I know I'm awesome :p Anyways in the wise words of Ferris Bueller "You're still here? It's over! Go home." Don't just hang around a forum moaning and bitching about one or two members who were honest with you. It really doesn't make you look good. Either suck it up stay and fight for what you believe in or find somewhere else.

I will always try my best to answer a question, even if it has been asked a hundred times before. You will always get different answers each time so a newly asked question may bring up new useful information and, where the question is equipment related, products may and probably will have changed since the previous threads. I will also, where appropriate, add a courteous suggestion that the op may want to do a search of the forum as there may be additional information on here than may prove useful to them.

There is absolutely no excuse for rudeness though. If you fell that the OP should have searched first but can't put it in a polite way, then don't bother answering at all. But I also applaud Will for his apology.

BTW, I don't believe there are any cliques out there, just a few small support networks that have built up and I don't think this is a bad thing. Mayden, that's the second time I've seen you accuse this forum of being closed minded to anything "international" yet we have members from all over the world here, taking photos from all over the world. It's also the second, maybe even third, time you've made an "I'm definitely leaving" post so maybe this isn't the forum for you. I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of people from this forum (and will do again in about an hour from now) and they amongst some of the nicest people I've met.

There seems to be some very nice people here, quite destroyed by the boys brigade and their little click. New comers and genuine helpfulness are not a part of the plan. Rudeness and attack by the b chums is tolerated. I wish some of them would look outside here and realise they are not all that good, no matter how fantastic they think they are.

Outta here for good now, but thanks to all those folk who were actually human and really want to be part of a group. Some just troll around so they can big note themselves.

I wish any newcomer a lot of good luck you are going to need it.

In spite of what is said this is NOT the be all and end all of forums. It is not the only place in the world, there are many forums that actually accept quite happily, members from different continents and people who have different ideas.

The guy apologised for his style of posting, but you cant let it go. i think your ego was hurt more than you realise. Dont take offence to suggestions, you take your view and you explain it, you try and get others to understand what you are trying to achieve, you dont just go :baby:

FYI we have members from all over the world, and all levels of skill, there is no clique, the only clique that was here disbanded a while ago, there is a difference between a clique and people disagreeing with you ;)

As for other forums, yes there are other forums...but those that flounce off, they still read the boards(as you have shown) and some suck it up and post more shots, and prove that THEY are the better person, that is the ideal for us, members getting better at photography, learning and sharing

Talk Photography isnt about telling everyone they take great pictures, its about helping to learn about photography and how to take BETTER pictures. If you want people to blow smoke up your ass for every picture you post i can point you in the direction of a few. If you want to learn, this is the place.

Very well said and put :clap::clap:

I was gonna put something very similar but felt it wasn't my place to do so..

With the greatest of respect, I thought you'd left?.

Flounce Factor 3/10.
Recommend you do a google search in order to learn new skills and increase your score. Hope this helps

keep on asking the questions as I prefer an experienced humam answer rather than a page of text from the web. although i do think the first post is a little rude and on the photography learning journey a hand should be used to help not give someone a slap in the face !

i joined the forum because of the friendly advice thatwas on offer on all aspect of photography, and hope this will continue

Might aswell close this now as it's acheiving nothing.

will87 has apologised for being rude and stasted it wasn't his intention

So we can now move on :)
