rgrebby im not being rude but have you ever thought about doing a simple search. You ask alot of questions that A) could be answered by a simple search on TP (B) could be answered by google (C) a bit of common sense would not go a miss.

I always thought that this place was a nice easy place to get helpful information instead of cold searching from Google and so on.
I thought by asking questions I would help the community by making it to grow and in turn helping others that have not had a chance to ask these questions.
So far I have learnt a great deal from reading others questions, things I hadn't looked for at Google.

Like Matty says in my post "If people are just going to use google all the time we may as well all clear off now."

But if google is what people prefer then thats a sad thing, it makes me wonder how many other people dont ask questions because they think people will laugh at them..

I guess thinking about it, im proud to carry a little sign saying I dont know much and maybe in the future when i know what ive learnt I will be happy to help other people instead of 'not being rude'

Anyway, here is my sign...
:amstupid:

Ignore it. Plenty other people will help. The same questions get asked time after time and a lot of answers will be given, so a search on here will likely provide the answers you need.

Don't let it put you off, just ask. I do:thumbs:

This is what annoys me about some forums when newbies are told to use the search facility.
My take on forum life is that the more proficient answer the questions put and in time these newbies start to replace the old guard with their new found knowledge, it's called education.
The reply posted above is of no use, frankly rude and will probably result in one less member.
If members are not prepared to help with repetitive questions then move onto another forum.

BTW this is one of my pet hates on forums.

Just remember theres no such thing as a stupid question............just a stupid answer;)

I've just realised this member (Will87) is a newbie.....that's a good start to forum life.

I say keep asking the questions. Whatever you ask will probably benefit others too. We all have to learn somewhere and I have found this forum to be incredibly friendly and helpful. Yes I do sometimes google, I often search the forum to see if I can find the answer, other times I just ask away.

please don't be put off by comments from a minority. The majority would gladly help, even if they have posted a similar answer numerous times before. I think we all need to remember that we weren't born with knowledge.

It's always best to ask the question. It helps everyone grow, and also builds a fantastic database of photography information all in one place, with real first hand experience of how something actually works, not just how it works in theory. Ignore him, people like that either realise that that's not the attitude to take, or don't realise and get the boot.

As for google, who's to say what you find there is right? Or relevant?

And I'm proud to carry this too:

The only truly bone question is the one that you never asked ;)

I think it is better to search for the answer yourself first and then if really stuck ask others. I don't like people or myself being spoon fed.

To a certain degree, but the response he got was totally our of order I'm sure you'll agree! Sometimes being spoon-fed is the best way I think, especially when the info is clear and concise. The thing with forums is they're great for discussions. You may want help on one thing, do a search for it and find an oldish thread full of useful info, and other opinions/techniques etc, ask the same question today and you'll get a whole other set of ideas from newer members, members who were not around much when the older thread was started, and people who simply never saw the original.

I'm inclined to agree. If you're always going to make a new thread about every single question then the forum will become swamped by "Canon or Nikon?" "Which wide angle?" "Should I be a wedding photographer?" There are many good answers on TP. Many good questions that have been debated time and time again. It doesn't hurt to search or google for things. If you're still stuck then ask away.

I just know that I've had many people ask me the same questions over and over and they're so easily answered by searching. The classic one that I spot on TP is "What's HDR?" I know for a fact that the answer is on the first page of Google. My guide is there :) Hell, just put "hdr" into Google and my guide is on the first page. Its so simple and easy to use is our Google.

Agreed

Ask as many questions as you like, there are plenty of people on these great forums more than willing to help you out!

Plenty willing to offer stupid answers too :D Muhahahaha ;)

I think regardless of whether you think someone should just do a search or not, there are ways to answer them without being rude. Simply running a search on here, if for example the question was about HDR ;) you could then paste the link to the search and say something like "if you look at some of the threads in the link they will answer your question"

That way you have helped the poster, highlighted how to search, and you would not have been rude or upset anyone - happy forumites all round!

Sometimes people can get overwhelmed when doing a search on a topic, I don`t think there`s any harm in aksing is there? If someone can direct people to a thread that may answer many of their questions, then this should be OK too.

Not using search functions is something most of us have guilty of at some time or another is it not? :)

I've asked many a stupid question on here (some I wouldn't like to own up to) but everyone is always happy to help. mi'd say its the friendliest forum out there. just a shame 1 or 2 try to spoil it. I notice the user (Will87) didn't offer to answer your question !!!!

stick around, I'm carrying the flag too :amstupid:

Recently a very experienced member (I won't name names) posted a thread moaning about the same thing, how people should search before asking repetative questions. I found the thread a bit obnoxious but said nothing.

A couple of days later he/she was on another thread offering advice on a subject which had featured repeatedly in a number of threads in the previous weeks.:shrug::shrug::shrug:

Beats me. As I said just keep asking. If people don't want to help then they can just ignore the thread. I'm sure they will find something else to mump about.:nono:

At least he has the balls to apologise at the end of the thread you posted:)

I'm a newbie too and I say, if you can't be helpful, or don't wanna help then say nowt. I'm fairly new to photography, so I can understand your frustration :gag: and if peole can't help you give them this hahhahhaha :bat:

rgrebby, forums always have the odd miserable person on them - don't listen to them. Ask away I say... :)

I have recently joined this community and have been impressed with the consideration and thought given to the majority of posts. There is much less rough and tumble than on other sites.Trawling my way through various bits of Forum info I came across some advice from "Marcel" regarding rude or aggressive posts.Just use the "ignore" function-------------Sounds good to me -What a great idea !! This also seems to be a well moderated site (forgive me for appearing sycophantic--its not intentional) and so reporting an offensive post is likely to get it removed pretty smartish.
Speaking personally I like the really naive questions as they are the only ones that I am likely to have a reasonable shot at answering so keep posting,
Pete.

Threads are like buses sometimes...macro lens, weddings, calibration, etc...

There are some stickies (maybe there should be more but I suspect they'd be ignored) and there is a search but the reality is people just want to get an answer to their question. Sometimes I suggest using the search in reply rather than do the work for them, must be my wife's job and terms such as "enabling" having an effect ;)

I don't think there's anything wrong with suggesting a search as long as it's encouraging rather than grumpy old codgeresque

At least your post wasn't 'which dlsr should I buy for a n00b' type thread.

I think the reply was Out of order, especially from a newbie I feel, but he did apologise.

I haven't been here long enough to get a feel for the place yet, but I'm 99% certain after a shortwhile I will see repeated questions and posts over, BUT in saying that the signal to noise here seems to be very high for a webforum, considering the numebr of posts/users.

Oh well - the internet - SERIOUS BUSINESS!

usually the ideal way to suggest searching involves a little work
For example

"I've got no personal experience, but a quick forum search brought up this - I searched on *whatever* if it helps"

Unfriendliness and leetness seem to be a bit of a theme on TP and even of numerous threads lately....there are too many nitpickers, spelling and grammar gurus on here and you will get picked up for the stupidest things by the smart arse brigade who will take a thread way off topic and who really need to get out and take pictures instead of brow beating newbies or bad spellers.

Also, Google doesn't know anything. It just searches in the stuff that it finds, on the internet, very often on forums like this one. If we never asked questions (and got answers) on places like this then google would have nothing to tell you.

Anyway, to conclude, work it out yourself you n00b! lol

I beg to differ. Google knows plenty by proxy :p (If you have to be picky) :p

You are right ask what the h**l you like - that's good for all here - even if they don't know it and will87 was rude. I can understand you being annoyed, however will87 did apologise and you should have been man enough to post a quick - no problem and that would have been the end of it.

All the bandwagon lynch mob - give will87 a break and go and play wih your brollies !

I'm going to be a little "Out there" and disagree slightly - whilst the initial reply was harsh, I do think it unfair that every question be answered without a little guidance to a search.

There are alot of questions asked that are very easily answered by a search, and asking the question and making someone else do the legwork, just smacks of laziness to me.

In reference to the original post, if the OP had tried a search - even if it was a cursory, "sigma flash manual," and didnt find anything, then thats fine, at least you tried.

People who ask "where can I find a Nikon D90 manual," or something similar when a quick google of "Nikon d90 user manual" (Or even Nikon D90 Manual) would yield a result, just really is irritating. A 0.17 second search saves the person time, the potential forum answerers time, and server space.

He apologised way after I posted this, I replied as soon as I saw his post.

Ok rgrebby
My mistake, I'll put you back on my Christmas card list

What the h**l, no one is obliged to reply and someone else may have been thinking about this too, not to mention many questions of this type have posts added which lead to productive discussions. That's my view anyway.

although have been a "Lurker" on here for a while,i only just joined up.
The main reason for doing so was simple-It seems to be pretty much the friendliest/most helpful forum i've come across.
Was nice to see the apology-On most of the forums i read there wouldnt have been one,and things would have turned into a flame-fest..
I do however prefer the direct "Ask any question you like!" approach,as Rockshifter pointed out-such threads can,and often do lead to productive discussions, perhaps with a different approach/POV to previous threads.
I also feel it helps members with the whole "Getting to know each other" "Fitting in" thing-Especially newer members.
Im quite sure i will manage to post a lot of dumb questions in my time here, and if those with high post counts are annoyed by such things-Then simply dont reply...
(Cant see that being a problem on here ***!)

There seems to be some very nice people here, quite destroyed by the boys brigade and their little click. New comers and genuine helpfulness are not a part of the plan. Rudeness and attack by the b chums is tolerated. I wish some of them would look outside here and realise they are not all that good, no matter how fantastic they think they are.

Outta here for good now, but thanks to all those folk who were actually human and really want to be part of a group. Some just troll around so they can big note themselves.

I wish any newcomer a lot of good luck you are going to need it.

In spite of what is said this is NOT the be all and end all of forums. It is not the only place in the world, there are many forums that actually accept quite happily, members from different continents and people who have different ideas.
