when you see peoples pics on the forum, how do they get there name and date stamp on the bottom corners of there photos, are they water marks of some sort, or is it to stop people using there work??

Most processing software can do that.
It is to combat copyright theft.

... but it doesn't necessarily do so.

The only sure way I know of to stop copyright theft is not to upload them.
