Naming jpeg - too many characters?

For as long as I can remember I've been adding long(ish) titles to my pictures (I like to be ordered about it all) and recently started to batch title/number when saving my processed raw files through CS2. I previously added them individually in windows explorer (I title all the same and just add an increasing 2 digit number so it was copy paste the title add the number).

Today I had to go back to doing it through windows as I needed to take some photos out of each batch and had no problems for the first couple of batches when suddenly I can't add more than around 12/15 characters - useless for me to name them correctly. I also couldn't title a folder with anymore characters.

I deleted my jpegs from their folder, went back to my raw files to re-save and batch title and they won't even save to the older (file path cannot be found!)

Any ideas on why I should suddenly lose the ability to title my pictures fully?

I believe the maximum file path (including filename) is 255 characters in Windows......how long is the path the files are contained in?

12 characters is a limitation of FAT formatted drives, but that wouldnt magically stop working overnight. but as above NTFS should support 255 characters (i dont think it does include the path? i cant remember now, too early lol). either way it should tell you if youre exceeding the limit when you go to apply the new name?

i take it the drive is showing no signs of dying? may be worth a chkdsk if its all of a sudden stopped writing. or may just be a corrupt folder, try recreating and try again.

FAT32 supports 256 char filenames, albeit by a bit of a kludge - the traditional 8.3 filename is retained and additional entries in the directory table are used up with the long version of the filename.

There is a total path length including filename restriction IIRC (also 256 characters), even in NTFS. I could be wrong about that though, it's a very long time since I experiemented with it.

i cant remember to be honest, its something like that lol

i think its original FAT that has 12 char limitation.

either way i dont think thats that lol

im rambling. someone give me coffee.

I'm nowhere near the 255 limit on these, probs around 50 for the folder, similar for the individual photo. The whole filepath is probably no more than 150/160. Nothing I haven't done many times before.

It worked fine for 2 sets then suddenly started allowing only around a dozen or so characters.

A shut down/restart didn't help. Will back them onto the external drive and start again with new folders and see if that makes any difference.

The drive seems fine.

Will try again tonight.

Thanks for the advice.
