Just been given a leaflet for a course at Grantham college to do a NCFE, it's £250 plus £50 for materials over 26 wks. Is it worth doing one and can it open up any oppertunities for further advanced courses, what would be the benefits ?
I wondered if it would be better to go on a workshop for Landscape photography with a pro/semi pro.

i started doing one this year and in my opinion it's not worth it..........

first 12 weeks were pretty much

a week on ISO
a week on Depth of Field
a week on compostion
a week on aperture etc......

all very useful don't get me wrong but i don't need 3x2 hours to learn the relation ships between shutter speed , aperture and ISO

2nd term was a bit made up as we complained about various things (12 weeks to do a project)

I gave up term 3. Had to submit 12 images of "faces / my favourite place" or "a family day out"

3x 2 hours researching on the internet?
then take some pics, print off contact sheets, say what you like what you didn't like,
go back and take some more,
repeat,
go back and do more
submit final 12....

Seemed a lot of padding of time to justify the cost.

I am guessing with 1200 posts and a D300 you are at worst a reasonable photographer and therefore my opinion is that the course would be set too low for you (if its the level course)

Also very much tutor dependent, but I learned more off guys and girls on here than on the course. Thanks to all the guys on here, I got told off for being too harsh in group critiques........

"The water on the horizon is not level"
"Does it have to be?"
"Show me some water on a lake that isn't level. Its one of the many effects of gravity."

Thanks Lynton, a very thorough answer, seems like a lot of faffing about and money to get just a basic certificate that might be worthless.
I'll save some cash for a workshop i think.
