I`ve seen some nd 8 filters and would like to know if these as suitable for longish exposures ie waves at the beach to get the blur effect(?) or car head lights at night effect?
ND8 (3 stops) may be enough at dusk. It is likely to increase exposure just enough to get some water movement, but don't expect an incredible look from a 10 stop. When it gets slightly darker, there is hardly any need of any filter - the exposure times soon reach several minutes. For most applications 10 stops are best, but 3 stops has its place in the kit somewhere.
Forgive me for the slight hijack - however can anyone speak of exp with a variable ND filter? I'm sure I read recently that someone is producing a 2 - 10
in one - Tiffen maybe??
Would it be effective do you think?

I don't have any experience on long exposures of water etc but when it comes to light trails you can use a ND filter but on the whole they are not needed, GRAD ND's can prove very useful for golden hour trails, I am in the process of writing an addition to my light trails guide to cover the use of different filters in light trails which I hope to complete in the coming weeks
