ND Filters - advice

hey

After some advice on ND Filters, never used them before and looking to get some.

what would everyone recommend? on a budget price range.
 
Have you already got a filter holder?
What will you be using them for?
 
No not got a filter holder yet, wasn't sure which were best to go for, the ones needing the holders or not.

Mainly landscape it will be used for, it's something new I was wanting to have a go at

On a budget, you're looking at the Cokin P series.

I would suggest a 0.6 hard / 0.6 soft and 0.9 hard grads to start you off with. It's the combination I carry everywhere and use.
 
For ND filter's I'd recommend Haida on a budget.

For ND Grads I'd recommend Hi-Tech over Cokin on a budget.

What camera & lens/filter size? That will determine 85mm or 100mm square kits.

What effect are you trying to achieve?
 
There isn't a particular shot I'm trying to create it's more down to wanting to give a new technique a go at.

I've only got a basic set up at the moment which is why I'm looking into getting bits of equipment

Make sure you distinguish between ND grads and ND filters.

Grads are used to balance the exposure between a bright sky and darker land. If you were just starting out in that direction, I'd suggest getting a 2 stop hard grad, and experimenting with it. If you get on with it you can branch out into different strengths and maybe soft grads as well.

Simple ND filters are used to cut down the amount of light hitting the sensor overall; in the case of a 10 stop grad, to something like 1/1000th of the actual value. Very popular over the last few years to produce those "misty water at sunset down by the pier" type of images! You need a tripod to use them.
