id like to get into landscape photography where I can get that beautiful misty waterfall effect but I've never used ND filters before. Is there a grade that would be best to start with if I only bought one? Any advice great fully received.

what type of system were you thinking of getting ? the Cokin P series or just the screw in types. I too am looking at my first purchase of filters and was thinking Cokin P for adaptability.

Appreciate not quite what you asked, but you might like to know that there are apps on smart phones for calculating exposures with ND filters

Really not sure. I don't know the virtues of each so can't make an informed choice.

When deciding whether to go circular or Cokin style, the circular filters are generally easier to get a light tight seal. You may wish to check out buying a circular filter the size of your largest lens and buying stepping rings to fit your other lenses
