ND Grad Kit

Hi Guys & Gals,

I am off on my sunny hols soon and I was thinking about getting myself a ND Grad Kit so I can try my hand at some Landscape shots, I dont want to spend the earth as I dont think its something that I will make a habit out off as I am more focusing on sports (motorcycling).

I have seen that Cokin do a kit for £60 and it includes the following

3 P-series filters
1 NDx2
1 NDx4
1 NDx8
plus holder

Now the questions are these,

1, Do I get it or does anyone know anything better ?

2, I dont know which lens to buy it for, either the kit lens 18-55 or my 70-300 lens as the sizes are not the same, is there one that can fit both ?

I am guessing you can stack the filters to give a higher ND rather than just the x8, for example 8+2=10 and so on ?

Well, the Cokin P set seems like a good place to start. Bear in mind, however, that the set you described contains no graduated ND kits, which are more useful for landscapes. Check these out:

Same thing, but they have 2 ND and 2 GND.

Second question : The filters fit any lens, but the adapter ring changes depending on how thick your lens is. My kit lens is 55mm, but this is different for every lens. It should tell you somewhere (either on the lens, in the manual or try the lens specification - might say filter size)

Also, yes, filters do stack up like that.

If you buy a kit then you get 1 ring, if you need another then this search should help

Quick Edit : Also, your question said "separate holders". You do not need separate holders for different lenses - just different adapter rings

That would depend on how wide the lens he wants to use is I'd guess. The standard Cokin p series holder has three slots but below 28mm(in 35mm terms) the holder will cover some of the frame. Theres a wideangle holder with only one slot that will cover you down to 20mm(again in 35mm terms) going from Cokins own info.

Ok, here is another dumb question, I notice you can get grey or black !!

Whats the effect going to be there or am i missing something ?
