On the look out for the square filter type ,not lookin to spend too much at the moment I'm more curious at the moment .
What do you guys on here suggest for £15-£20

They're all resin. Kood is cheap and decent quality, or SRB.

I bought the Cokin last week from Jessops £21

SRB Griturn ND grad filters are actually Hi-Tech filters, my soft ND0.6 from them works great and showed no visible colour cast after I shot slide film with it.

Almost true - SRB filters are made by Formatt, but are not the same as their Hitech range.

Ive spent the last week working out which filters i need or want. Decided to plough for the Lee filters. Its cost me £250 for the set up of 3 filters complete with the kit to attach them to my lens. However, I have been informed that they will be well worth it and last an age.

Strange, my one has a 'Hitech 85 filter system' logo on the back of the plstic case and the barcode on it is marked 'Hitech 85mm ND0.6 Grad Soft'. If you look on the Formatt site at the standard Hitech filter range then their exactly the same as the ones from SRB. I wonder if I accidentally got send the wrong one or something...

That's interesting, could be a production mix up. It's no secret that Formatt make SRB grads, but I had a pile of both recently and they were not the same.

SRB was a thinner material, and had a very slighly different tint to it. Both were notable for having a noticeably harder grad line with the 'hard' versions, compared to other makes and the soft cut ones were a slightly different tint again.

It's well known that some of these grads vary a bit batch to batch though. Lee is the only brand that you can really guarantee as consistent in colour, density, and the strength of the grad cut.

And as so are way way way out of my price range!

well to my eyes

the colours in the mid-ground are poor with filter in-use..?

and the grasses are not sharp

would a polariser have been a better choice maybe..?

Not sure your comments about the foreground and sharpness are valid, but a polariser would have made a good job of that. There is a decent amount of polarised blue sky for it to work on, and a polariser doesn't darken the clouds so they really stand out. It might have darkened some of the foliage/grass too by removing some reflections (there are always some) but hard to tell how much difference that would have made there.

Main problem for me with grads is that they darken everything above the line, including buildings, churches, trees etc. That's the main reason I prefer a polariser or HDR technique.

looking at the greens in particular, they appear washed out in the treeline and in the hillock just right of centre

the grasses below the white house, and indeed the white house itself, seem sharper 'without' the filter

regards...:D

I also think the greens are washed out and grass less sharp. The polariser would have been a better choice imo.
