ND3 10 Stop Advice

Looking to get the above. Want to use it on the 10 - 22 so its a 77mm filter needed.

Have found formatt sell an 85mm one, what sort of adaptor do I need to fit this?

you can buy 77m 10 stop filters

or do you want a specific brand?
 
If its slot in you need to buy an adapter ring that has the same size as the thread of your lens and then a holder.

look at premier ink, they do this stuff quite cheap, 85mm is "P-Type".

Do a search here to check that an 85mm filter is okay - 85mm at 10mm might cause a vignette, so you might need to go for a 100mm filter.

Lol not at the moment as I havn't been out much due to the crummy weather!

I've performed test shots in the garden and the filter performs as described, and actually seems to increase effective sharpness at high f numbers possibly due to the fact it decreases the effects of diffraction?

I will be taking it out to the coast this w/end hopefully, weather permitting!

Square ones are a PITA, apart from the Lee. They must be sealed against light leaks, which only the Lee has AFAIK.

BTW, a filter factor of NDx8 is three stops, which is a long way different to optical density of 3.0 which is is ten stops and a filter factor of x1024ND.
 
...but do you always need a 10 stop, where some people have the shutter open for massive amounts of time?

Do you think you will buy other filters in the future?

If you go with the 100mm slot in from the beginning you can have various arrangements with Neutral Density (upto 10stops) and Graduated Neutral Density (various strengths,hard edge & soft edge) as well as attachments for polarisers.

These will work on any lens you would be likely to ever buy. You only need to buy an adaptor for each lens width.

If you go with screw in ones then you need to buy a filter for each lens or buy stepup rings.

The screw in ones seem a bit less hassle to use for ND's anyway...Grads really need to be slot in so you can position the filter accordingly.

I've got a combination and happy with that setup for now.
 
Never realised the screw on 8/9/10 stop filters existed - Very tempted by one now. :thinking::nono::nuts:

(i did buy all the bits to make a welding glass one but never got round to it)
