Hi Folks

Advice please.

Have had a Sig10-20 for 10 days now and loving it! Now I need the filters :shrug:

It seems nigh on impossible to buy a Cokin P154 ND8 - have looked over the www and spoken to Devon Camera in Exeter and London Camera Exchange in Plymouth! I'm being told that Cokin are having a few probs and the ND8 is impossible to get in the UK right now :thinking:

I did see this one but it says Neutral Grey on the description?????

The LCE in Ply have the filter kits containing ND8,4 and 2 with adpator ring and holder blah... (but no stocks or hope of stock of ND8 for the forseeable future) - I already bought the adaptor ring and single holder :gag: - the cost of the filter kit at LCE, which has the ND8 in it, is around £50 but I know the triple holder causes mucho vignetting..

So... I've been searching around and saw a HOYA circular ND8 which I'm assuming then there would be minimal/no vignetting

now, see, as I know diddly squat really about the differences in these filters - my question is:

Would the circular filters be better as they are obviously just screw ins and would this mean no vignetting?

What would you use a ND2 and ND4 for? (I know they could be doubled/tripled up to bring it down more stops - but other than that, what would you use them for?

Am I looking at the right circular ones and what are the differences between Tiffen, Hoya and other...

Finally, for anyone who's made it thru this post... slice of lemon drizzle cake for anyone who responds!

Are you looking for graduated filters or just a solid ? I've got the cokin filter holder and a nd8 grad which I use on my 17-50 with no vigemette you can get a wide angle filter holder which sorts the problem out or have a lol at lee filters more money but supposedly the best

I'm looking for the solid ND8. Yep, I got the Cokin Wide Angle Slim "P" Filter Holder. I don't think the Lee filters will fit that... hmmmmm..... not sure about that.... and yep, more dosh. Quite honestly tho - I am that desperate now to get a filter after borrowing Pete's on Sunday....

oh oh oh, you wait 'til you see my pic - it's the best I ever ever ever ever ever took!


I'm thinking I may just bite the bullet and get the Lee and see if I can return the filter holder and adaptor ring to Exeter as they haven't been used (only got them 10 days ago)... so.


Hmmmmmm - don't know what to do - will see if someone can tell me anything about the circular ones as a comparison to the square ones... I'm thinking there must be some folk on TP who have experience with them a?

Hope you had a good journey back home yesterday - I was soooo knackered and pretty crook last night - but it was so worth it - loved every minute of yesterday - so glad you made it down and hope we'll all get together soon.

costwise, square filters are much cheaper than circular ones and also benefit to be used on lenses with different thread. for Sigma 10-20, you have to select the wide angle slim holder to avoid vignetting. Kood offers a full range of cokin P filters at a cheaper price. easy to find on ebay. it's just a starter choice. you may end up investing into a Lee or Hi-tech system if you found they become essential to you.

I believe I know already they will become essential to me - thinking about it, it may be a better idea to get the square ones as I'll be able to use with my other lenses... whereas if I get the circular ones, it will only fit the sig10-20 ...

so...

hmmm... guess I will go with the kit unless anyone else comes up with some more info or has experience

I am pretty sure that you will suffer from vignetting with the P size filters at 10 to 17mm on the Sigma I use one ( a Sigma ) with Cokin Z pro filters and had vignetting at 10 to 12mm untill I used the Lee wide angle adapter which will fit the Cokin Z pro carrier with about 0.5mm play but its not a problem it also helps if you remove one of the holder leaves which would restrict the number of filters you can stack. Personally for ND8 I would look at circular filters and I use the Helliopan which are more expensive than the ones you mention but are very good and you can get them in a thin mount version which helps if you then want to use them with other filters in avoiding vignetting. Hope that helps.

Hello Peter - yep, there is some vignetting as I discovered at the weekend - I'm not going to stack filters (well, not yet anyhoo) - I do agree the circular one will be better but it would only fit my sig lens and I have 4 other lenses I could be using filters with so.... have decided to just go for the square one to start off with - I'm in "oh-my-I-have-to-try-that" and "how-did-you-do-that? I-wanna-try-that" mode at the mo where I wanna try out lotsa things. Unfortunately, my flexible friend may complain before much longer :D

I wanted a macro tamron 90 and ended up getting a sig10-20 and a new camera - ahaha - talk about opposite ends of the spectrum :p <shakes head>

Actually live next to a wee babbling brook (raging river in the winter) but my camera battery ran out mid way thru a ladybug and bleeding heart shoot :bonk: ... tsk tsk tsk... <must.stop.clicking.all.the.time :p>
